https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/01/22/health/face-mask-n95-coronavirus-transmission/index.htmlStudies have shown that masks significantly decrease the chances of transmitting or contracting the coronavirus. But not all masks provide equal protection. Depending on the fabric and number of layers, homemade and simple cloth masks have a range of effectiveness that can be as low as 26%, which leaves the wearer vulnerable.
Some experts like Brigham Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School physician Dr. Abraar Karan have been advocating for public use of N95 masks from the start of the pandemic. In an interview with CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Dr. Karan outlined why N95s are critical at this stage of the pandemic.
"If for four weeks the country essentially wore these masks in those risky settings like that indoors, what kind of difference do you think it would make?" Gupta asked.

Some European countries are already taking that step to prevent coronavirus spread within their borders. Earlier this week, Germany and France mandated that all citizens wear high filtration masks like the N95 in all public places.
More at link. Joe has invoked the Defense Production Act to make masks, vaccines, etc., but N-95's take quite awhile to manufacture.

50 masks for $57. Bought one for my granddaughter at Hobart. It's worth the peace of mind.

(5,219 posts)plus it has a shield in front intended to mitigate moisture from other people coughing or spitting at close range. The shield helps hide the plugged valve so people in medical offices or other places don't say it's not an acceptable mask because it has a valve.
The part of the mask that touches your face is a soft gel that is both comfortable and doesn't permit exhalations to fog up glasses.
The only downside I've found is that it comes out from the face further than a cloth mask and it's a little hard to see downward ... but no worse than a standard N95 mask.
BrightKnight
(3,684 posts)They are good for construction work but not ideal for this. The mask is also to prevent you from spreading.

He not only had cold/flu symptoms, he talked to me or on his phone literally nearly every waking moment. I was in a semi truck with that clown the whole freaking way..

(8,178 posts)My struggle with every mask I've used so far is dealing with glasses fogging which I need when I'm grocery shopping etc, but the other, much more problematic problem is dealing with the ear straps which refuses to stay secured. It's just infuriating while shopping, conducting business, requiring both hands for transactions etc and the dang thing pops off my ear in the middle of these tasks.
The masks with the ties doesn't work for me either. totally useless to me.
I'm curious if the N95's functionality regarding the issue with staying secure, and foggy glasses? more important is staying secure.
LisaL
(47,399 posts)Which is not good, since foggy glasses mean the air you breathe out is escaping through the top of the mask. Which it shouldn't, if the fit of N95 is good. The N95 masks do usually stay on for me, because they have the bands that go around the head instead of ear straps.

(34,189 posts)So it seals the mask better than just the little metal strip. Paper tape is thin so should not interfere with the fit other than to make it better sealed.

Also stated if glasses are fogging, which happens to me too with 3M N95's, wearer is at risk of infection (moreso).

This photo is a Caterpillar snow removal and snow blower, although not the same exact machinery as a snow cat. I couldn't find an image of a snow cat that was a Caterpillar brand, so I provided a Caterpillar brand of a similar machine.

(16,223 posts)Made in China but the company is registered with NIOSH.

About $100 for 20 masks. Maybe a bit pricey, but what is your health and peace of mind worth?
They can be reused. After I go someplace I put the mask used in a paper bag and don't use that one for at least a week. By that time any virus on the mask will have died.
When I had an appointment with my primary healthcare person and I was informed the next day she had just found out she had a positive test for covid, I was glad I was wearing an N95 and so was she with a paper surgical mask over that. I apparently missed the bullet and tested negative for a couple of weeks for a total of 4 times.
And to everyone that says "my cloth masks are just as good" that just isn't true. With the new more contagious variants you really need all the protection you can get when you have to be around other people.
LisaL
(47,399 posts)good. Not because it's true, but because supplies of actual N95s is low.
Liberal In Texas
(16,223 posts)Cloth masks are more effective to keep from infecting other people, not as good for keeping the wearer safe.
ProfessorGAC
(76,555 posts)There are studies that contradict that in the OP.
They've been publicized for months.
It's simply untrue that cloth masks do not provide protection to the wearer.
There were no N95 masks during the days of the tuberculosis sanitariums. Bjust simple, one ply, cotton masks.
There were thousands of nurses & doctors who worked with TB patients for years that did not get sick. Those that did, were only at a modestly higher rate per thousand than the general population, given the high degree of exposure.
This was a hundred years ago.
Certainly N95 masks are better, but this notion, exacerbated by the politicization of masks, gave the resistors a built in excuse. "Why should I wear one? They don't work anyway."
I don't think DU is a place where that myth is propagated further.
LisaL
(47,399 posts)Bacteria are much larger than virus. Furthermore, a lot of people who are exposed don't actually develop active TB disease. Covid therefore is much more infectious.
ProfessorGAC
(76,555 posts)That sound you hear is the point rushing right past you.
It was one example. Want more that are viral based, you can find them.
Polio, smallpox, mono, measles, rubella, hepatitis, meningitis,...
Need I go on?
The point is there is a hundred years of medical industry results contradicting the notion that cloth masks don't help the wearer.
I come to DU for information & accuracy, not myth.

(47,399 posts)during riots, while sitting in the room with anti-masking Republicans? At least 3 that I know of.
So, please, don't tell me how great cloth masks protect people. They offer some protection, sure.
But you not going to have health professionals wearing them now to protect them from TB or other diseases.

I think my ears are smaller than the average person, because those straps just pop right off of my ear. usually the right side only.

(21,278 posts)I've seen her a few times on TV with "KN95" clearly visible on her mask. Just yesterday Sanjay said KN95 is almost as good as N95. Preferring to leave N95s to front-line workers, I bought some Chinese KN95s and cut one open to see the inside. It had 5 layers as advertised.

(24,875 posts)Way too many Americans are too fucking stupid and arrogant to make any prophylactic work.
NONE!
We live in a society with a large population of idiots, and they are determined to have their way, to hell with their grandparents.
I swear, if we had a pandemic similar to what Stephen King wrote about in The Stand, where 95% of the population dies, a significant number of the people left over would STILL claim it was a hoax
Americans are the fucking dumbest people in the world.

(1,585 posts)Hopefully once production ramps up the government will ship some N95 or KN95 masks to everyone.
With the rampant spread in the US going unchecked for so many months and our lack of screening, I would not doubt if there are several US variants out there just as bad as the UK, Soth Africa and Brazil ones.
