The Republicans wanted to delay the Impeachment trial instead of starting it the day after Nancy Pelosi delivers the Article. They got the delay.
What exactly did the Democrats get?

(151,259 posts)My suggestion: Use more words to clarify what you are saying. Two people asked you for clarification. That should be a sign.

(151,259 posts)than trying Trump. There is a rush of need to do the first. Trump can wait.
So, no, Schumer didn't blink. He thought, instead. That's what we need: thought.

(1,406 posts)Now Democrats get to get more Cabinet members voted on and initial legislation voted on.
There is no hurry for the impeachment. Trump is gone and more terrible evidence against him comes out every day.

(130,516 posts)In fact, delaying the trial for a couple of weeks is probably a good thing, since more dirt seems to be appearing every day (like last night's revelation about how Trump was considering firing the acting AG to install a stooge who would try to strong-arm GA election officials). I know it's fashionable these days to bust on Democrats, since we don't seem to understand the concept of a circular firing squad, but this isn't Schumer's first rodeo, and a delay isn't a defeat. If anything it's an opportunity.

At this point, a few weeks isnt going to matter.
Lets get President Bidens nominees confirmed and then we can look at it.

Waiting any length of time doesn't suit McConnell, and I suspect he was under pressure to ask for the delay.

(62,536 posts)There's dozens and dozens of these guys who are saying Trump is the reason they went there. That is evidence in his trial. I know that often we need the moment to get things done but these are Republicans we are talking about. The case has to be complete and utter. Democratic Senators talking about each and every insurrectionist and how they felt that Trump was telling them to do it.
Remember Trump speaks in double speak, he implies, but doesn't say directly, he told them to "walk down there" but he didn't give directions, they "walked down there" and they started an insurrection. By having their testimony as witnesses against Trump we might, *might* be able to get him convicted.
Otherwise the Republicans will let him walk.

(1,620 posts)... let the evidence pile up.
That and if you give Trump some time to prepare, you cant be accused of ramming it through.
joshcryer
(62,536 posts)...the more likely he will grandstand in his trial. He's no longer sitting President, he's relegated to obscurity, he may want want last stand where he actually is called to witness. And we know how that would pan out. He would be utterly decimated and destroyed. There's a reason they didn't let him testify in the first hearing.

(17,376 posts)on Bidens part. McConnell walked right into it. The case is just getting stronger every day. McConnell will be begging to get this thing going now any day now.

(9,647 posts)The Republicans were/are going to try to make a stink that Trump was given insufficient time to prepare his defense. I am okay with the short delay in this situation, especially as we learn more and more. I look forward to witnesses being called.
As long as the operating resolution has not been agreed to, all the committees that review the nominations of cabinet officials are still majority Republican.
They can hold up the nominations anyway.
Yes the evidence against Trump will continue to mount up. He isn't going anywhere, but people are dying every day.
If the Republicans continue to obstruct by delaying the shift to Democratic control of the Senate agenda, the Democrats cannot demonstrate their ability to govern and get relief to the people who need it - all of us.
I want to trust in Schumer's talents. And it is imperative that we address the ongoing national emergency NOW.
So, again, what did the Democrats get?

(8,178 posts)Biden needs his Cabinet confirmed, and Mitch needs to get his ass put into place on the Jim Crow rule aka the filibuster.
In the meantime, Even more evidence has and will be coming out. Just the bombshell reporting of direct hand wrt DOJ to overthow the election is a huge win for the Dems. Might have to actually draw up another article and frame as directly involved in conspiracy to organize a coup. or some such wording to mean the same.
It's only two weeks, we've got some important housekeeping in the Senate to get done that's been delayed because Mitch is delusional to think he has a right to certain degree of power that would render our side completely toothless.
Bmoboy
(642 posts)Yes, collect evidence for the impeachment rial.
But - the Republicans are still controlling the flow of Senate activity - confirmations, Covid relief bill, consideration of ANY legislation.
Until the power sharing rules are in place, that will continue.
What leverage does Schumer have to make Mitch give in?
When has Mitch ever given in?
