He has the lessons of Stalin to lean on. If the leaders disappear into the Gulag Archipelago, or the grave, the masses will sit down, shut up and act like good Russians. He may come to the point where he has to get the attention of the crowd with machine guns (for the sake of restoring the peace). If Putin feels threatened, he will do what he feels like he has to do to remain as a permanent ruler. It is all about Putin, not Russia.

It’s harder for him now, but not impossible.

We don't have the authority, the willpower or the political unity to threaten him in Russia. He is fully aware of the lack of response of the world after the Tiananmen Square protest, and will have no reason to fear reprisals. We have maxed out on economic sanctions, our toolbox is virtually empty, short of war.

The best hope for the Russian people is to give Putin a dose of his own "medicine." Failing that, he could fall off a balcony.

For the Russian government. Support the opposition. Harder sanctions from more countries. Ban there oil sales with allies. Seize their money in western banks. Let the CIA do their job.

The Russian government has all but declared a cyber war on the US and the west. A cyber counter-attack would seem to be an appropriate response, especially one that specifically targets the criminal cartels that have gathered around Putin.

Turning the other cheek on that asshole will only result in symmetric bruises.

Size all assets in western banks, then bar Russia from the banking system entirely.
Follow that up with a total embargo. Fuck him!

17. Magnitsky Act, it is what they fear most.

This method works. It need to be a strong part of international law. It is a tool and method that lets other nations stop the influence of individuals who are too powerful in their own country to be stopped.
This has the potential to stop threats in our country as well. As the rich find their international worth and power is taken away, they will only have the power to influence their own nation and they will no longer be able to flee with their wealth. Even if this gets out of hand, it will have the tendency to reduce the concentration of global wealth and the political power that the wealthy hold.

No real downside since the wealthy owners and clearly demonstrated they wont protect this world unless we force them to.
