(11,728 posts)They are "working the refs". That is what right wingers do. They complain that they are being silenced while having almost unfettered access to media.
The sad thing is that they have convinced many that there is a "liberal media" that pushes an agenda like right wing media pushes one. If the media outlet is not specifically pushing a hard right agenda, then it is "liberal media".
Fascists and hard right types love to push the narrative of simultaneously being strong and being victimized by enemies on all sides. It is meant to insulate and arouse their followers to react from fear and bond through a shared perception of strength.

(16,925 posts)I want to "smack 'em upside the head" whenever I hear a RW Nut-Job complain about the "librul' media!"
It's just embarrassing that they've gotten so much "mileage" out of such a distorted, bullshit claim!

(11,728 posts)There are some pretty interesting videos on You Tube about how the right uses liberalism's own values against it. Contrapoints has some videos about "Does the Left hate free speech?" and "How to Spot a Fascist". Innuendo Studios has a whole series called "The Alt-Right Playbook". Both of them go into depth on how right wingers use the ideas of being neutral and impartial, and the idea of tolerance against liberals to push their agenda. They have some critiques of liberalism, as they are more left wing, but they are good information.

(6,254 posts)story about Hawley that is truly horrifying. In 8th grade he signed a yearbook for a friend Hawley President 2024. His teachers deom grade school through Stanford and Yale note his driving ambition and intellect. At every level this guy was told he will be president someday. And many of his classmates at Yale say he has changed, and not for the good. He was groomed by his pro-life fanatical mother and the article ends by saying while January 6 may have caused a drop in his popularity at home, it gave him national exposure and name recognition and why his political consulting form that makes all his decisions this guy is going to be a force we Dems better take seriously. Good read at link.

(24,263 posts)I think he's a moron. I lived and worked in Silicon Valley for a few decades and I've met many Stanford grads who were idiots and social misfits.
I also think lawyers become politicians because they aren't very good lawyers. A good lawyer can make way more money than a member of Congress, legally or illegally.

(3,039 posts)Many fools were found on the Stanford campus. Misfits is too nice but it works.
Heres some other shockers:
1) In 1986, Mike Pompeo graduated first in his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point.
2) Ted Cruz graduated cum laude from Princeton University in 1992.
3) Carter Page graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1993; he graduated with distinction (top 10% of his class) and was chosen for the Navy's Trident Scholar program
Mr.Bill
(24,263 posts)I remember reading an article years ago about him when he was first elected. It said when he was at Princeton, he required anyone who joined his study group to have gone to one of a short list of high end prep schools. The gist of the article was along the lines of what a self-important arrogant prick he was.
But I wonder if it was just him surrounding himself with very intelligent people so he could ride on the backs of their work. Now I should say I went no farther than community college and I don't know much about the culture at higher learning institutions. Just a thought, though.

(6,836 posts)Yes, there are "educated idiots," way too many of them ... but what they are lacking is not exactly intelligence. It's not even always the same thing. For some it's clearly false premises (alternative facts) that make them irrational. For others it's clearly empathy - they can see very clearly what needs to be done to maximize their own wealth and welfare and pursue that very cleverly and to hell with anyone else. With still others, it could be something as simple as attention span. You do not get admitted to Stanford or Harvard or Yale or Princeton without having at least academic intelligence. The problem is, academic intelligence isn't enough.

(6,254 posts)about America that dates back to when he was 15 years old writing a column for his local paper defending the grievances that cause people like McVeigh to blow up a federal building and defending armed militias. He takes his advice from the sale political consultants that put Rick Scott in Fla. gov seat and now a US Senator and propelled him from the Missouri AG to a US Senator. Its not about where he went to school or how much money he can make as a lawyer, Im a lawyer and know Hawley can make hell of alit more in the private sector. The danger is that Hawley, unlike Trump, is book smart and a religious zealot to boot. Should Biden and the Dems not deliver over the next four years or should we find ourselves in worse shape than we are now, the danger of a real authoritarian coming to power is real. And while the article I referred to was not flattering to Hawley it ends by mentioning that while Hawleys popularity has slipped, overall he is now better known nationally and poised to make a run at replacing Trump with his base. Hawley doesnt carry the baggage the Trump did. Even fellow students at Stanford and Yale say that Hawley they see today is much worse version they saw back in the day.

(1,322 posts)I'm not sure if the trump morons will glom onto this guy as the shiny new object of their devotion. Trump was as stupid as his base, they all spoke the same language. I imagine this monster uses words with more than one syllable. He's not a TV celebrity. He's dangerous nonetheless. Hopefully we can find a way to hobble him in the next few years.
MyOwnPeace
(16,925 posts)A really good point you make:
*"Trump was as stupid as his base." He always sounded like he was running for Junior High President, even though he didn't read as much as most junior high presidents do. Hawley is not stupid - Stanford University and Yale Law.
He's going to have a tough time getting into the Biker Bar pulling up in his Mercedes wearing his Brooks Brothers suit.

(24,263 posts)I tell them if a state is 60/40 conservative and progressive, we call it a solid red state. We say republicans win by landslides there. But 60/40 means if you are a progressive sitting at a table of ten, you still have three progressives to talk to.

Eventually, it festered into the utter nonsense AOC points to; cons don't just want equal acceptance for spouting "edgy" garbage and psychotic conspiracy theories, they demand a cookie and a parade in their honor every time they fart through their mouths.

(1,648 posts)Hawley does not understand or relate to normal average Americans that have had to actually work to survive. Hawley probably thinks all Americans have a country club mentality and have always had a Fund to tap into or a benefactor paying them lots of money for favors.
