REVEALED: Dr. Fauci is the highest paid employee in the federal government with a $417,608-a-year salary and in 2019 he made more than Mike Pence and Dr. Deborah BirxDr. Anthony Fauci is the nations highest paid federal employee raking in $417,608 in 2019, which is the latest year that federal salary data is available
He made more than the president's $400,000-a-year salary
In 2019 he also made more than Mike Pence, who outranks Fauci in authority, and made $235,100 in salary as well as Dr. Deborah Birx who earned $305,972
If Fauci remains in this position and doesn't get a raise he'll make $2.5million from 2019 through 2024
Data shows that the highest federal employees were medical and dental officers

That's better than State governments, where the highest paid employee is often the university football coach.
Top tier football coaches are paid more and contribute less to society than Dr. Fauci.

(17,802 posts)but really, no gov't worker should get that much. period.
This explains his steadfastness to trump. After hours changes of voice don't absolve him.

ETA: Dr. Birx isn't even in the same ball park as Dr. Fauci and shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence, imo.

(32,354 posts)Dr. Fauci could easily double that salary in the public sector.
Thank God for expert, motivated public health officials.

(17,802 posts)We shouldn't pay them like princes.
He isn't that valuable.
It does explain why he was subserviant to trump though. Gotta keep the payroll.
mopinko
(73,726 posts)he could make twice that. and subservient? rly?
the most i saw was tolerant.

(17,802 posts)If he can make that much, he should go to pfizzer. He shouldn't make that ,much in gov't service.
We should pay people enough to attract them, but getting rich off the public trust is not the role of a gov't job.
Let him go into public life. I'm fine with that.
mopinko
(73,726 posts)that's what my ex used to make. because we spent it wisely, it grew.
but w/o me holding the purse strings, he could have easily pissed most of it away.
it's good money, but lots of talented ppl make that kind of money. aint fair that so many make beans. but that aint no kinda fortune.
getagrip_already
(17,802 posts)that salary only puts you in the top 1%. How can you possibly say it isn't a lot of money?
Not enough to get rich? Really? That is a LOT of money. Whatever else you believe, that sentiment is untenable.
mopinko
(73,726 posts)that aint cheap. and started an urban farm. that aint cheap either.
we saved for retirement. our kids went to college.
i have a net worth of a few mil. hardly in the market for a yacht.
comfortable, secure, able to afford stuff, yes. but money to burn? no. i'm 67, i wont be working much longer.
i'll have something to leave my kids. i'll be able to afford help when i get infirm.
untenable to whom? you can think what you want. and so can i.
getagrip_already
(17,802 posts)I'm not going to say I had it hard or had to scrape by. It is a LOT of money, and NOBODY should claim it isn't enough to get by on.
That is beyond the pale. I'm happy you did well. But that doesn't mean it a paltry sum.

(73,726 posts)stop putting words in my mouth. yea, comfortable life style.
but a long way from filthy rich.
now back off. stop insulting and attacking me.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,876 posts)Because if you think this person isnt really a government employee, you would be mistaken.
Lockheed (along with the vast majority of defense contractor firms) gets the overwhelming majority of its revenue from Pentagon contracts, which means we as taxpayers completely support their balance sheet.
Complaining about Faucis salary but dismissing the salaries of the largest defense contractor CEOs is disingenuous.
And FWIW, that article is 2 years old.
getagrip_already
(17,802 posts)regardless of how you term their employer. Pay should be based on performance and be relative to the lowest paid employees.
No exec is worth $20M, especially when their company is failing. And double especially when they are making money off the gov't budget.
But that is besides the point. The point is that this gov't employee is over compensated. He isn't worth it given the past year alone.

(5,133 posts)He's responsible for an organisation that saves tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of lives a year. If you're not willing to pay market value for competent professionals in key government positions you are putting peoples' lives at risk. If the last four years have taught us nothing else, surely it's taught us that.
He's 80 years old and has likely been making a similar salary since he was appointed as director in 1984. He could retire comfortably if he wanted to. I doubt he's keeping the job for the paycheck.
Do you also think teachers and nurses shouldn't be paid a living wage because they should be doing it for the love?

(20,709 posts)Yes, it's a lot, but it's not "a lot a lot" like CEOs and hedge fund managers who make hundreds of millions/billions for providing far less to society than Fauci does.

Yay, he's a vital public health expert making the money he is worth. No problem there.

(19,382 posts)I do think he deserves the pay, but comparing two different pots of money.

(2,369 posts)The OP was comparing his salary with coaches. If you don't like that, take it up with them.
The comparison is important, however. Many of these coaches are indirectly paid for with taxes, as they are with state schools. Whether or not their salaries wind up coming from idiot alums who want to support the sports programs or revenues from the overemphasized and useless competitive sports programs, they are still 100% useless.
Dr. Fauci is incredibly useful. It's sick, whether either is paid for by taxes or not, that sports leeches are paid more than the nation's epidemiologist who literally can be the person that makes it possible to save hundreds of thousands of lives.

I think we can afford it. Dr. Fauci actually should be paid more.

(5,068 posts)I just hope this whole thing has not damaged his health. He is not a spring chicken and the stress when sandwiched between a global pandemic you are trying to understand and control and Ding Dong Donnie suggesting injecting bleach into people could be a good idea has to take the Stress O Meter into the red 24/7. I'd love him to explain his stress reduction regime...gotta be better than my two martinis at happy hour. (I mean I would add it to, not eliminate, the two martinis).

(11,504 posts)Remember that he was already a legend in the early 90s when George Bush Sr. name checked him in a debate. Fauci could have cashed in a long time ago, and the fact that he's still working for the government at 80 is a testament to someone who clearly chose doing the most good over a paycheck.
