Could Trump be legally subpoenaed to testify at his own impeachment?

Or would it be politically incorrect?

Would he take the 5th? If he did, would that mean he never gave himself a pardon?

The possibilities are endless.

Could Trump be legally subpoenaed to testify at his own impeachment? (Original Post) kentuck Jan 2021 OP
I doubt it. It's not a legal proceeding. Buns_of_Fire Jan 2021 #1
It's the Senate. They have subpoena power. bullimiami Jan 2021 #5
True, but the only real penalty for impeachment is removal. Buns_of_Fire Jan 2021 #6
there needs to be a special counsel just to investigate and prosecute trump. bullimiami Jan 2021 #7

Yes, but if he lies under oath it's perjury. CanonRay Jan 2021 #10
Is there even such a thing as a secret pardon? It needs to go through a process. bullimiami Jan 2021 #2
I think 11 hours is the general requirement. :) PurgedVoter Jan 2021 #3

It's a bunch of old white guys on the Board of Directors trying to decide if his incompetent ass should be fired. Or, in this case, if he should be flagged "ineligible for rehire."

It's not a criminal proceeding (although, in his case, it should be).

Let's see trump, under oath, not purger himself given 11 hours of questioning.

But we don't force criminal defendants to testify at their own trials in criminal cases. They can if they choose to, but it cannot be forced or compelled.

I don't see why the senate hearings should be any different. I'm sure if trump asked, he would be given a hearing - under oath. And even if the senate doesn't vote to remove him, he could face criminal charges for lying to congress. He would also have to answer committee questions.

I'm pretty sure he won't have the cahunas to do it. all downside. no up. But he does love his spotlight. I'm sure he will do a softball interview on one of his pet networks as the hearings proceed.

Now if you are asking if he could be subpoenad to testify in congressional hearings not a part of impeachment, he's just your run of the mill citizen now. He could be forced to appear, and then take the fifth or answer with lies.

lindsay was promising to subpoena obama to the judiciary committee, but he doesn't seem to control that at the moment.
