Despite the widespread coverage of and attention to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump insurrectionists, law enforcement agencies been largely reticent to provide direct briefings to the press and updates for the public about what happened.
But on Wednesday, a statement from the Capitol Police Union, the officers on the front lines of the siege, shared new details and assessments of the attack that weren't previously known. It added new information in response to the closed-door testimony of Yogananda Pittman on Tuesday, the acting head of the U.S. Capitol Police, whose remarks were reported by multiple outlets.
In the days since the attack, much of the information and videos that have come out revealed the events were much darker, more violent, and more organized than many initially believed. Because many of the people who stormed the Capitol wore ridiculous costumes or acted in absurd ways, some news viewers were led to believe the invasion was a largely farcical stunt. But in reality, the insurrection was a deadly serious expression of violent and menacing forces within American politics.

(82,849 posts)They very tidily swept the First Annual Trump Impeachment Trial under the rug last year, not receiving any evidence or testimony about the articles of impeachment sent over from the House. It was such a rousing success that Senate Republicans want to do it the same way this year. Without evidence, without testimony, it's super easy to just squawk "Partisan witch hunt" and go back to soliciting donations for their next campaign.
But you start hearing testimony, start reviewing evidence, run the clip of Trump exhorting his armed and violent mob to storm the Capitol Building and all the nasty sequelae, and it becomes a little tougher to hand wave away the whole messy business. Why, some of their own constituents might pose impertinent questions about why their Senator didn't vote to convict Trump in the face of all this "beyond a reasonable doubt" evidence?

(3,131 posts)People need a reminder of how deadly serious the assault was, how wide the insurrection plot was and how much white supremacists are imbedded in the Republican party, law enforcement and the military.
I want Trump banned from office too, but the problem is there regardless of trump and we need to continue to root out the insurrectionists and the white supremacists.
There are posts about how 10s of thousands of people are leaving the Republican party. Thats encouraging, but 74 million people votes for trump. Its a drop in the bucket. Continued prosecution and exposure is needed to root out tthis evil.

(3,131 posts)Pushing back against white supremacy and fascism are the keys.
Whether they remain in the GOP or form a new party they are a huge danger. Splitting the GOP makes it harder for them to get a majority but populist movements can grow quickly and in unexpected ways. A split doesnt make us safe.
Just adding more thoughts/opinions.

(27,567 posts)Some of the surviving officers are stilling coping with severe injuries
"I have officers who were not issued helmets prior to the attack who have sustained brain injuries. One officer has two cracked ribs and two smashed spinal discs," said Union Chairman Gus Papathanasiou. "One officer is going to lose his eye, and another was stabbed with a metal fence stake."

(25,962 posts)Hearings and more hearings, hours of testimony televised and with many videos showing what really happened, are absolutely required. There is no question of just 'moving on.' It's now glaringly obvious that there was an attempted overthrow of our elected government, and that involvement went deeply into that government itself, and that those tasked with protecting members of Congress were also deliberately compromised.
This goes so far beyond, 'well it looks like we had a riot and didn't handle it very well, oopsie.'
Those who are directly responsible through their choices and actions as well as those responsible through deliberate inaction need to be exposed and brought to account. So many layers of what happened absolutely need to be peeled back one by one, examined, and dealt with, or we will not be able to maintain a functioning republic.

(27,567 posts)I don't. Everything needs to come out there. Including this, and including Trump's attempt to recruit the military to rumble into town and hand the Presidency to him.

(90,762 posts)All of this has to be made clear and shouted from the rooftops.
Shove the facts in their face. Each and every time they attempt tp downplay the insurrection, hit them with the facts.
Call a lie a lie and call a liar a liar.
Don't allow the insurrection to become a matter of opinion as torture was allowed to become through bullshit framing.
As in all those times people referred to torture as "Some people call it torture".
Don't allow it to become "Some people call it insurrection".
Treating it like it is up for debate and the only difference is which side of the aisle you sit on.
Because torture is torture and insurrection is insurrection.
