'Charming' D.B. Cooper suspect Sheridan Peterson dies at 94

Sheridan Peterson, long considered a suspect in the D.B. Cooper skyjacking case, died Jan. 8 in California. He was 94.

The California native served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and later worked as a technical editor at Boeing, the aerospace manufacturer based in Seattle.

He also was an experienced smokejumper. He loved skydiving and taking physical risks, even reportedly “experimenting with homemade bat wings.” These were keys reasons his name has flitted for years around internet message boards devoted to the D.B. Cooper case, the only unsolved skyjacking in U.S. history.

A man using the name Dan Cooper hijacked Northwest Orient Flight 305 out of Portland on Nov. 24, 1971. He parachuted out of the plane with $200,000 in ransom -- and disappeared. This led to the skyjacker becoming a folk hero. The case has inspired books and documentaries and even a feature film starring Treat Williams.

Perhaps Cooper didn’t survive his jump from the plane. After all, the parachute he used couldn’t be steered, his clothing and footwear were unsuitable for a rough landing, and he had jumped into a wooded area at night—a dangerous proposition for a seasoned pro, which evidence suggests Cooper was not. This theory was given an added boost in 1980 when a young boy found a rotting package full of twenty-dollar bills ($5,800 in all) that matched the ransom money serial numbers.

I'm sure they searched the area and didn't find a body, but then again, animals could've taken care of that.

Hopefully, he left some notes behind.

You know, that's a lot of freakin serial numbers to keep track of (10,000), and I wonder how good of a job they did tracing it.

Oh well, thanks for sharing.

The only thing the FBI did was interview him. He was living in Nepal at the time of the hijacking.
