Pat him on the head, tell him how great he is, tell him how important he is, give him some meaningless task. McCarthy's statement after the meeting clearly was intended for an audience of one. He sounded like Trump's old doctor.
Maybe we're looking at this from the wrong perspective. Maybe it was McCarthy with the ulterior motive. Give Trump a toy to distract him for a while so they can get through the trial.
Don't get me wrong. The GOP still intends to acquit him as they always have, but trying to keep him from doing anything stupid - and further damaging - during the trial must certainly have crossed their minds. They're probably thrilled that he's off Twitter.

(7,444 posts)Doesn't want to have Trump start his own thing. These idiots would rather kiss a criminal's ass than stand up for the people of the USA

(28,836 posts)That was just his usual bluster.
He's too lazy - that would involve actual work. Plus, he knows full well that his only chance is with the GOP.

(13,900 posts)If he thinks starting a 3rd party will somehow keep cash flowing in he'll just rant and rave to get enough of the crazy GOPers on board, they'll do all the actual work.

(18,486 posts)People have been saying for years that Republicans are playing along with him so they can keep him under control. That's proven to be wrong.
They dance to his tune.

(15,501 posts)He went to see T***** to find out what T***** was planning, if Russia was still backing him, and perhaps how to leverage those plans to gain a few more seats in the midterms.
Another thing he may have been discussing was getting backing for a recall run of Newsome and getting T****'s backing for him or his chosen GOP pick for CA governed.
McCarthy was a small town Wunderkind, and has never evolved much past that. He's not very sophisticated, nor does he think much past his immediate goals.
