Conservatives warn culture, political wars will worsen

Axios

The verdict is clear: The vast majority of Republicans will stand firm with former President Trump. The next phase is clear, too: Republicans are rallying around a common grievance that big government, big media and big business are trying to shut them up, shut them out and shut them down.

Why it matters: The post-Trump GOP, especially its most powerful media platforms, paint the new reality as an existential threat. This means political attacks are seen — or characterized — as assaults on their very being.

Fox News' Tucker Carlson told us that many in Trump's base feel that the "combined forces of global power have turned on them and are cracking down hard — hilariously, in the name of democracy."

"Not a sustainable moment," Carlson added. "Something will break.”

Ben Shapiro, a media leader on the right, told us this sentiment "is widespread, and it grows more dominant with every NYT columnist calling for a social media crackdown, every WaPo columnist lumping in mainstream conservatives with Capitol rioters, every corporation mirroring woke priorities."

The original quote comes from a play, 'The Importance of Being Earnest', written by Irish poet, author and playwright Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900). The quote in the play is spoken by Lady Bracknell, “'To lose one parent, Mr Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.”

...we must shut up the voices of our fascistic masses.

Germany was forced to do that and finally embraced it.

How we get there I do not know.

But get there, with firm resolve and swift follow-through, we must.

They've been on this precise trajectory since 1992 (and in this general direction for much longer).

The GOP has been ruled by tantrum for long enough. Don't expect us to appease you, boys and girls. You'll only demand more.

You. Built. That.

Every rational person must band together with each other to form an unstoppable united front, with the goal of democratically quarantining them from office, and legally quashing their attempts at violent insurrection.

Part of the trending 2022 picture seems to be with women.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/republicans-2020-gains-in-the-house-set-them-up-well-for-2022/

The rest might depend on whether old midterm voting patterns hold. Which is why we have to fight like hell for the next two years.

If Democrats had added five to 10 seats this year, they could have survived a 20-seat loss in the midterms. Instead, Republicans will probably need to win fewer than 10 seats to gain a slender majority in 2022.

On top of this, Republicans could very well benefit from the new district lines that will be drawn ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. The GOP is set to fully control redistricting for about two-fifths of all House seats, while Democrats will only hold sway over one-tenth of them, with the remaining seats are in states with divided governments or where redistricting is done by a commission system. The Republican line-drawing advantage should help the party draw favorable maps that could help the GOP win more seats than we might otherwise expect.

We can notice some numbers we'd like to believe, but imo, we need to act as if we're 30 points down.

Because that's how Trumpcult rolls it out until 2022 and beyond.
They live for the fight. They don't care about anything else but the win.

It will likely be a referendum on how well Biden is seen as handling the pandemic and maybe also on if some good legislation passes. If Biden does well, which I expect he will, I think we’re in relatively good shape, especially Senate-wise. Now, to succeed it requires all hands on deck when the time comes with donations, telephone calls, and door knocking.

is exactly how you've described this next two years. The Democratic president does well, despite doubt machine major media and social media fights and trolling by the alt-right.

Democrats know the facts and sit back complacently, sure they'll win or retain their seats. It happened once. In 2018. An "against" vote. Because of Trump.

But with Democratic incumbents that "against" vote always happens, too. But unlike Repubs, we don't vote. Let's call it what it is -- stupid.

When the time comes? When do you think that is? esp with the current 24/7 messaging onslaught little more than a week into this new administration?

Let's not set ourselves up for House loss by only paying attention to facts we like.

And I know we’ve sat out mid-terms and blown it, especially in 2010. But all I can do is vote, donate, and work to get Dems elected. And I do think 2022 will be unique due to the pandemic. I could be wrong but I think this is an FDR type election atmosphere.

donate, make calls, and knock on doors. It’s out of our hands otherwise. But I think if Biden handles the virus well, we’ll keep Congress. There’s plenty of areas where Trumpers are in the minority that we can take advantage of.
