President Biden's unity pitch has gained steam since November, with fully 71% of Americans saying they would rather see Republicans in Congress find ways to work together with Biden instead of focusing on keeping him in check (25%).
The new finding from a Monmouth University poll shows a notable nine-point increase in the public's thirst for Republican cooperation with Biden since just after the November election when 62% said the same. But perhaps more importantly, the widespread support for GOP lawmakers working with the president to tackle problems suggests that Biden's unity push is very much in sync with the public. Biden recently clarified that to him, unity meant coalescing around what a majority of Americans think will improve their lives, but not necessarily securing Republican votes for those policies. In short, it's about the public, not the lawmakers.
If you pass a piece of legislation that breaks down on party lines, but it gets passed, it doesn't mean there wasn't unity, it just means it wasn't bipartisan," Biden explained this week.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was also asked to clarify what unity meant to Biden. Unity is about the country feeling that theyre in it together, and I think well know that when we see it," she said, adding that Biden would be working on that at "every opportunity he has to speak to the public."

(913 posts)In fact the messaging is so successful that Biden has his opponents saying the word constantly. Imagine Coca Cola getting Pepsi to keep saying "Coca Cola"!
And as Biden made clear again today in his brief spoken remarks, he wants Republican votes for the Covid package, but it has to pass no matter what.
Don't mistake "unity" for giving in to all Republican demands, or even giving in to allowing Republicans to block a bill that could otherwise pass with reconciliation.

(11,564 posts)As long as the public knows what's going on, and who is actually working FOR them, that's all we can ask for.
Jim Jeffries said something in one of his specials that is in line with this idea.
"This might be the most hippy thing you ever hear come out of my mouth, but hate cannot beat hate. Using hate against your enemies just makes more hate. The only thing that ever beats hate is love.
Maybe you have someone in your own life that hates you, and you hate them. Instead of hating them, try treating them with nothing but love. That person will probably never love you, but eventually, everyone else will know who the asshole is.
Don't be the asshole, America. Don't be the asshole."

(18,402 posts)Telling their representatives and senators they want to see more cooperation and comity, the politicians will listen. They wont listen to us (or to Biden).
Im not holding my breath, but these numbers are at least a little encouraging.
