(20,591 posts)This is the traitorous Trumpublican party we're talking about here. Just like there are no circumstances under which Donald Trump could ever be found guilty in his impeachment trial, there are no circumstances under which Trumpublicans would ever censure the QAnon princess. This is the new "normal" for 40% of this country's population. It is this that 60% of our country's population must fight like hell to defeat, or this country ceases to exist.

(3,921 posts)because it could be the last. In America we have a pro-democratic party (Dems) and an autocratic party (Repubs) and the fight is really between those of us who believe in democracy and those who do not.

(3,921 posts)Their entire act seems to be about emulating RW militia white men - who would take all of their rights away in a second if they could.
The only reason these women have any rights is due to the very liberalism they crusade against.

(5,361 posts)They are what I call "Serena Joys" (after Yvonne Strahovski's character in The Handmaid's Tale). They think what their male counterparts want to do to women won't apply to them because they are activists for the cause. They believe they will gain more power if they succeed, but they don't understand the true nature of the patriarchy they support. Should they succeed (heavens forbid!), they will be subjugated into lesser positions with no power, no voice, no vote. A "high" position for a woman in the society they hope to create will be a much lesser position than they currently enjoy, but they seem to think that won't happen to them, just like Margaret Atwood's Serena Joy. She was (is) not a happy woman. This is a cautionary tale, a warning, and it is right on.

(30,179 posts)These are the same people who say things like, "If you take away guns people will just use other things for weapons. You can kill someone with a fork." But now, I guess, they only have guns in their homes, not even a fork to kill an intruder. So tragic.

(4,108 posts)It's projecting a position of strength to get what you want and physically harm and intimidate your opponents.
To be honest, it's actually cowardly. The Orange Menace just gets his miscreant to do his bidding while he watches from safety of some posh cubby hole. Doesn't care when the folks he stirred to do his deeds get in trouble. Why bother when some other dumb ass gladly takes their place?
Martin Luther King and other black leaders suffered the same consequences as many of his followers. Beaten, gassed, arrested, dog attacks. Notice how the Republican leadership, Fox talking heads and that blow hard Limbaugh never walk with the folks they stir up. They sit in their offices and posh studios and gleefully watch as their supporters wreak havoc then quickly distance themselves and leave their followers to their fate.

Conservative activist family behind 'grassroots' anti-quarantine Facebook events

(13,480 posts)They still have their gunsany number they want to buy with all the bullets they can afford. They have the freedom to appear in public with loaded assault rifles and have police look the other way, as they did in Michigan when armed protesters went inside the capitol. They have the right to vote easily with no one trying to prevent them from registering, or voting, or closing their precincts to make it more difficult to vote. They have the freedom to vote, but they never had the freedom to throw out other peoples votes when they didnt like the results.
They even have the freedom to not wear masks, but if they choose to do that they do not have the right to enter private property by ignoring the rules of the ownerand they never had that freedom in the first place. Stores have long had the right to require customers to wear certain items, such as shoes, shirts, and masks. In my area, stores even have the right to post a notice that guns are not allowed inside. To my knowledge, no one has made an issue of that because it is the right of the owner to keep the store safe. Same with masks.
So what freedoms did they lose? Does anyone ever ask them that question?

(11,178 posts)This rhetoric has been around forever...since the Civil War and Reconstruction, since the Depression and the New Deal, since the Civil Rights and the Great Society era, through to Carter and the Iran hostages, on to the Clinton years, and then with Trump, birthers, the Tea Party and obstruction during the Obama years.
It gets a new coat of paint and a change in terminology - John Birch, Tea Party, Reaganomics, Trumpism...second verse? Same as the first...
It boils down to the same thing over and over and over. "Free-dumb" means never defining or admitting your grievances or policies beyond "smaller government, lower taxes" (while simultaneously demanding overwhelming "national defense" expenditures and kick-backs to donors).
This is always their rallying cry - "the GOVERNMENT sucks"...oblivious to the fact that "We, the people..." and "government of the people, by the people and for the people" means that WE - being ALL of us - are the "people" AND the "government". They never wanted equality of any kind - economic, sexual, racial, they want none of it. The subtext has always been that "THOSE PEOPLE" (blacks, women, non-Christians, Mexicans, Gays) are not worthy of the franchise, not 'real' Americans, not fully part of the government or the people.
The one "free-dumb" that they are losing for real is influence ultimately. They never wanted to be part of a "UNITED States of America", they want and still want a "WHITE/PRIVILEGED States of 'Mericuh". The rich want to continue to use hate and fear to keep the poor on the right willing to fight and even die for those very same rich bastards that are more than willing to use them as canon fodder if it means paying a lower marginal rate, or keeps the social problems of a NATION out of sight lines at the country club or gated estate grounds.
This is STILL the first Civil War (access, representation, rural versus urban, agrarian versus industrial) with the only issue actually resolved in THAT slaughter being the outright legal cover for chattel slavery going the way of the dinosaurs that many on the right refuse to admit died out MILLIONS of years ago.
How do you build a nation with anti-intellectual fools?
How do you halt a pandemic with society over-stuffed with idiots that wear a face cover as a chin strap and then complain about the length of time precautionary measures must continue?
How do you achieve an enlightened society for the future, especially the future where jobs and work are less plentiful than goods and services or deal with people, masses of them, displaced by AI permanently from EVER working again?
How do you save an inhabitable biosphere when these same people believe the only solution is to keep burning carbon until we actually starve, drown or fry?
The issues that they claim to want "unity" on would require the kind of compromise they are use to having - 100% our way, 100% of the time or total gridlock and nothing for anyone. Name 3 major changes to social programs in the last 40 years - I'll wait for the big things beyond the start that was Obamacare...prior to that we had Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Voting Rights - all of which continue to be attacked and hacked away at to make them less effective, less egalitarian and more neutered.
I try to see a way to reach them, but GENERATIONS have been having this same fucking argument since the founding of the Republic. The biggest change I see is the right just openly declaring that they want a king to rule them once more...they no longer want to be part of the decisions because the answers are hard, the work is long and the reward is basically privation and NOT dying. Easier to put in place a king and then kill them off as scapegoats when the horrors ahead crash into us full force...
I am in despair because it is so hard to see the path, or more specifically a path that does not include a schism and split of the United States into separate entities on the North American continent. I have begun really studying the Civil War to understand where to best move when this really gains further steam and momentum into the abyss.

(13,480 posts)You describe their belief system well. Like you, I dont know how we go about changing minds and hearts of people who at their core do not believe in democracy, for it is democracy as it has evolved through our Constitutional Amendments and laws that lifts up the ideal of equality for all. These people seem to believe in democracy only for themselves, and they have no thought or concern for the notion of the common good.
I, too, fear that if nothing changes at some point Republicans will overturn a fair electionpossibly in 2024and we will then be faced with a true Constitutional crisis. I have thought many times that we would be better off as two countries, both still larger than many other countries, but the logistics of such a move seem impossible. My city of Austin is a good example of how complicated such a split would be. It is heavily Democratic in a mostly red state. The cities of Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are likewise Democratic cities surrounded by rural Republican areas. The same is true in many other states, so there could be no easy split by geography. I know it is not a realistic solution, but Im so tired of dealing with the right-wing violence, lies, conspiracies, Christian Nationalism, and nastiness that I just want them to go away and let us get on with running and living in a country where decency and the rule of law prevail.
