(32,318 posts)I will cancel a doctor appointment, I will let snow pile up on my driveway to see that. If Trump represents himself all that the House prosecutors have to do is say, "you mean that there aren't 17 RepubliQuanons who don't believe this is crazy man's talk?
I don't think Trump has the guts to represent himself, but it is something to look forward to in this mad world.
Think about it; no decent lawyer is going to lie for Trump, a lie that is causing insurrection in the United States. Trump wants his lawyers to proclaim that the he won the election.
I mean I have been saying for years that Trump is mentally ill. Unless this is a strategy to delay the hearing?

(296,090 posts)That said - there appears to be an awful lot of mentally ill folks around cheering him on.
And yes - no decent lawyer will defend the emperor of the Trump terrorists.

(8,610 posts)It is highly probable that he was born that way. That is to say his lack of remorse, empathy, shame, and his evident joy at the pain of so many others including his own children are the result of bad wiring rather than some personal trauma.
I have sympathy for those whose illness leads them to do bad things out of a sense of confusion or even an expression of the pain they once encountered. I don't mean that I think they are not dangerous, or that they do not need restraint. But I do feel their pain and confusion, or at least I think I do.
Donald J. Trump is entirely a self-made monster. IMO He is who and where he is because that is what he wants to do and insists upon doing. He is not a subject of my sympathies at all. Nor are those in his immediate circle; family and friends alike. He has been who he is for as long as anyone who knew him has recalled.
Whatever happens in the Senate sessions he will not be a proper witness, nor accept direction from the presiding officer, nor admit anything he chooses not to. We've already seen his act many times. We hear it on the phone call he made to the GA election official.
Watch the Nazi party leaders and SS Commanders on trial in Nuremberg and you will see the same contempt for Justice, scorn for the facts, and refusal to submit to judgement by "lesser men" and "sub-humans".
And if you are wondering where Putin is in all this, he is still the puppet master winding up his pet monster and setting him off to do yet more damage to America. I have no doubt whatsoever about that.

(1,690 posts)The parliamentarians executed Charles I after the civil war, but they held a trial so it would look legal. Charles, despite all his flaws did a good job leaving the proceedings in knots. Yes, trump can't do that from a logical perspective, and this is a legally constituted proceeding, but Trump thrives on spectacle. Having a venue and the cameras rolling is what he lives for.
The responses to your comment show how much trump and trumpism is driven by peoples desire to look at the freak show. Even Howard Stern recognized trump as the master manipulator of the freak show. Legally trump couldn't be stopped from doing this, but the proceedings will have to be controlled so he doesn't turn it into a nationally televised rally style event for insurrection.

(21 posts)Charles I didnt succeed in tying them up for very long. He was charged with treason and he refused to plead because he did not recognize the authority of the court. Bad strategy. Under English law at the time, one could not refuse to plead. A refusal to plead was registered as a guilty plea. Hence his conviction.
As an interesting side note, Charles touched off the first civil war by breaching privilege of parliament (entering the floor without permission). Whatever the legality of Charless trial, it effectively stopped in England an international trend toward absolute monarchy (think Louis XIV).

(1,690 posts)Charles was a deadman from the moment he was taken prisoner, and the trial could have been a legal basis for stopping monarchial absolutism. His defense was pretty solid legally, and in English law he couldn't provide a plea because there was no legal authority to hear a plea. As he stated he saw no law before him, he saw a power. That the power wasn't going to be overly concerned that a legally constituted court would have required Charles remit doesn't make Charles' legal argument any less accurate. In essence he argued he was being lynched.
