Political legend Pete McCloskey compares 'psychopath' Trump to Hitler -- and traces the GOP's demise

If anyone ought to have perspective about the troubled state of American democracy, it's Pete McCloskey.

Now 93, McCloskey had more than a front-row seat during the turbulent Vietnam era and the fall of President Richard Nixon. As a renegade Republican congressman, McCloskey called for Nixon's impeachment over the Vietnam War in 1971, opposed him in the Republican primary in 1972 and was the first to demand his resignation during Watergate.

So McCloskey knows an outlaw president when he sees one. With the benefit of that experience and the wisdom of his years, does he see the need to view the reign of Donald Trump dispassionately as just a case of history repeating itself? Are people overreacting to the turmoil of recent times?

The 93 year old McCloskey sure sees things clearly and isn’t afraid to call them out.

He brought a keg of beer to the rally at my school. He was a very thoughtful guy and , IIRC, he tied our ME defense budget to Big Oil product protection thought that we should have billed the Kingdom for services rendered.

and the sheer will to resist saved this country from sliding into fascism. The Germans of post-Weimar Republic mostly had no idea of the deal they were making with Hitler. Those who did, ended up in concentration camps or worse.

With McCloskey’s analysis that Trump is a would-be psychopath madman like Hitler all the way. I’ve been saying exactly that for the last four years that this guy was a would be totalitarian dictator in the worst mold of the bad people we’ve seen over the years like Hitler, Joseph Stalin,Saddam Hussein et cetera.

Fortunately we stopped this SOB (no thanks to the spineless and/or ignorant Republican Congress).
