(8,614 posts)I agree that is what Trump wanted and still wants and it should be shocking to all Americans, including Republicans.

(5,499 posts)To our country's credit, being able to pull off and maintain such a coup in the US would take lottery odds to pull off. And even then, the stock market would tank, banks would fail, the economy would quickly mirror the social chaos.
And then things would get really bad.

(94,333 posts)The point here is that Myanmar has 1) a corrupt Officer Class which has interfered in politics before and 2) a non-professional enlisted Class that won't refuse to follow orders no matter how illegal. Neither of those conditions apply to the US. A military coup was NEVER going to happen here.

(92,061 posts)when the Pentagon was called. Trump appointed some people in the Pentagon that were aligned with him. There were ex-military and some military involved in the attack which was coordinated, and warnings from the FBI regarding this were ignored. The fact that the FBI says the threat still exits should be concerning
If the congressional leaders were killed in mass, what do you think would happen?
Lets see what the investigation and final report says

(8,755 posts)tRump toadies put in place at Pentagon and SecDef prior to attempted coup.
Capitol riot where chain of POTUS succession (Pence, Pelosi) are killed.
tRump declares martial law in the aftermath, Pompeo being 2nd in succession to tRump.
Military enforces martial law.
Fortunately the chain stopped as the riot failed. Even if the riot had been successful and martial law declared and enforced under direction of the toadies, I doubt if the coup would have held but would have been way ugly.

(36,421 posts)Trump might have pulled it off it he weren't so crude, if it weren't so obvious there is no decency to him, no bottom to him. That turned a lot of people off, got a lot of people to the polls to vote against him. Someone else is out there, salivating at the thought that the emoluments clause has no teeth & that someone before him came this close to toppling our government. Nicole Wallace took pride that the guardrails of democracy held & Jason Johnson said that we shouldn't think they will again. I'm with Jason.

It just sounded so familiar

(19,958 posts)if the generals in Myanmar saw the failed coup attempt in the USA and snickered among themselves: Hold my beer.
See, all ya gotta do is baselessly claim massive election fraud and proceed to take over by force! It's that easy! The U.S. President says it's okay so let's do it!
Unforseen side effects of the "leader of the free world" making a tin-pot wannabe dictator its "President."

(21,712 posts)The coup in Myanmar was because a powerful, charismatic figure didn't like the election results.
Sound familiar?
