Not anymore.
Last couple of weekends I have been along southern Lake Huron. Zero ice then...in January.
ProfessorGAC
(76,132 posts)I've seen no ice this year, and just past the dam, the water is only 3 feet deep.
Some winters, even the mill race freezes, and it's 15' deep!
So, I can believe there being no ice on huge lakes.

There's about 12 of us, so attendant says "Everyone in 1st class. Drinks are on United." then busts out the liquor cart.
Those dudes got TRASHED! She actually gave me 2 mini bottles of Courvoisier because "I grabbed you these before those guys to to the expensive stuff.
When we landed, I hurried to get to my car before those guys did. I'm hoping they had company limo or cab!

(7,510 posts)I was at my fiance's apartment in Queens Saturday the weekend it started. It snowed until Monday morning, and I called out at work. Tuesday I got up, dug out my car, put on the chains, and dug through the deepest drifts for a block to get to a plowed street. People on their stoops stood and looked at me like I was a crazy person.

(3,741 posts)even Austin in the snow, well a dusting only but snow! ... so many memories of great cities in the snow.
Do you have any great cities that you remember in the snow?
But NYC ... the best memories of all because the people make it so memorable. All of a sudden NYC becomes a small town were everyone talks to one another and lends a helping hand, is there to help out if you need it. A total transformation from a giant city to just little square blocks of folks living in communities. Once the snow melts the magic ends but as all NY'ers know ... that STRONG spirit is always there !!!!

Most cities plow the snow and push it to the side of the road. In Manhattan they can't do that. They load the snow onto dump trucks and carry it right out of the congested areas. Some of it gets dumped into holding lots outside the city, and some snow (I've heard) gets dumped into the East River.
The residents' cars are always parked left side-right side, so on any given day there's one side free of cars. That helps a lot, but if anyone's car gets stuck during a snowstorm, it gets towed. No mercy!

Oh, yeah, I know inland and especially land locked States
get more snow.
When I worked (non civil servant) for NYS government in NYC we had some people come down from the Albany (State Capitol) to add workers for the backlog we were dealing with.
They've laughed at us and our 1 1/2 ft snow.
They are used to 3 ft. When it gets above 4+ ft then they start to get cranky!
So I hear ya!
