Just a down to earth, normal man, just one of us.

(50,528 posts)The current Army and Marine boots are made of tan suede - which is going to be just fucking awesome for anyone who has to go to the motor pool, but I digress.
This man...

is currently tearing his hair out over the thought of not being able to gig anyone over his or her boots.

(16,917 posts)I was in ROTC in the late 60's - sort of an "insurance policy" to get a "better placement" if you were drafted and sent to 'Nam.
I was in the band and we were the LEAST likely to EVER 'get' or 'understand' the entire 'military' thing!
We were all issued uniforms and every Tuesday was 'uniform day' and band rehearsal was just after lunch. For the most part we were 'sheltered' or 'hidden' from the regular ROTC procedures because, well, we were musicians and they KNEW we were 'just not into' that whole operation. However, now and then we HAD to take part in a University-wide military 'inspection.' That meant we were expected to have the uniform pressed, brass polished, and shoes spit-shined!
So, while we're standing there for 'inspection' and a Cadet Officer (an upper-classman who has committed to advance training and a guaranteed military placement) is doing the 'down-the-aisle' inspection of all of us.
He made the mistake of picking 'our' aisle to go through. BAD MOVE!
As he looked us over you could see the disgust and dismay regarding our appearance.
Finally, he stopped in front of one 'especially disheveled' cadet, looked down at his shoes (very obviously not 'spit-polished'), looked back up at his face and angrily stated, "Cadet, your shoes look like SHIT!"
Without thought (or perhaps, WAY TOO MUCH thought!) the 'cadet' replied:
"JUST A REFLECTION, SIR!"

(7,270 posts)my dad was a Marine. And I don't have to tell you about inspections. But I will say this. Nothing brought tears to my eyes like when he dressed in his Dress Blues for certain ceremonies. But the tears didn't stream until being presented with Marine Corp Band Orchestra all dressed in their Dress Blues playing all of the patriotic standards. I would cry tears with intense joy.

(11,682 posts)And I like it.
Teary eyed as well when my WW II Vet Dad dressed in his Army Uniform shiny shoes and all. Memorial Days he'd lead the parade in my small Iowa town. He was a treasure in our community, strong, honest, well-liked. His life ended too soon. And at his funeral they lowered his casket as taps mournfully whispered from a nearby woodland. I never heard so many people simultaneously take to an outright bawl. Evocative on that late morning, on that day when Bill was laid to rest.

Nicely written account of your story, thank you for sharing.
Funny how the image of Biden's spit polished shoes provoked all these deeply personal and cherished memories.

(16,917 posts)Please understand the times - mid/late 60's and the debates/conflicts about American involvement in Vietnam. We were college kids in the School of Music - foreign diplomacy and military involvement wasn't high on our list of interest or desire of involvement.
That being said, we WERE appreciating our opportunity to 'serve' in the ROTC Band.
At THAT we were good!
That particular year we went to a National ROTC Band Competition - and in spite of our 'lack of discipline' we did win first place in the competition!
Several members went on to actually serve in military bands - many of us got deferments as we went out to teach in public schools.
As far as I know - NOBODY in the band had bone spurs.

(7,270 posts)Graduated from HS in '68. My dad and I were not on the same page, as it were. Yet those spit shined shoes, the dress blues, and the marine corp band were memories before Vietnam.
It was only this image of Biden's socks brought my attention to his shoes and then brought back those long forgotten memories of childhood with a military dad who loved to spit shine his shoes and I loved watching him doing it...
Thank you for sharing your story, bringing up fond memories inspired our President.
