NEW: Bullhorn Lady, one of the FBI's most wanted after she battered windows and issued orders at the capitol, is Rachel Powell, a mother of eight from rural PA. Her path to radicalization, and what it reveals about extremism in America:

I'm glad this woman was identified, and I hope she'll be in custody asap.

regardless this woman was one of the ringleaders and inciting others to violence. she should be locked up for a long time.
8 kids *sigh*. hope her husband has a brain. maybe the kids will have a chance of growing up right.

(8,090 posts)Eight kids ranging in age from four to mid-20s. She sold cheese and yogurt (?) at farmers' markets but was booted b/c she refused to abide by pandemic rules. Got a PT job at a bookstore. Just a hunch, but I'm guessing she's feeding at the public assistance trough all the while claiming to be "libertarian."

(8,090 posts)with a major chip on her shoulder. Her mother made a very good point about the carjacking -- Pink Hat should have been more empathetic toward the people inside the Capitol.

(11,683 posts)Powell could have turned out differently. However, the voices she got through FB were those of deception which led her off a cliff of radicalization. Yes, it could happen to anybody, but does it really have to?
PatSeg
(47,421 posts)Powell certainly did not sound like the type of woman who would end up storming the Capitol. She didn't even vote for Trump in 2016.

The power of the brainwashing that occurred in the last few years is extremely disturbing. I am sure there are many more stories such as hers. I wonder at what point did her brain shift gears and what could have made a difference?

(81,482 posts)Last November, Powell voted for Trump. It was a little bit of a hard decision for me, and I didnt make that decision to vote for him till two months before the election, she said. I appreciate his business mind. Economy-wise, he has it going on. He loves America. Ultimately, she concluded, she couldnt vote for the other person. I really dont think Biden or Harris will be good for the country.
Concerns about mask requirements, which she called a liberty issue, were instrumental in her decision. She claimed that the risks of the coronavirus had been overstated by public-health officials, saying that she had not seen many deaths in her county. On November 5th, 2020, she wrote in a Facebook comment directed at a friend, I wont get a vaccine either. I hear what youre saying about the whole world being in on the conspiracy as far as the corona virus goes. On December 27th, she posted, Im unashamedly a super spreader, attaching photographs of crowded, mask-free holiday and birthday parties. That day, she uploaded a video of a large maskless meal, during which several children said, No masks, and Powell could be heard saying, The masks are total bullcrap. You guys just need to get out there and live. Get arrestedits fine.

(2,522 posts)In some senses, to accept being told what to do implies acceptance of an inferior social status.
To refuse to accept being told what to do asserts a superior social status.
Perhaps the Democratic party should project something like:
"The United States Marine Corps has a rigorous anti-covid policy which is highly effective at controlling the virus while having a minimal impact on readiness. I cannot understand why the Republican supporters of Trump and other anti-maskers think that US Marines are stupid, brainwashed, robotic, sycophantic morons. However, they are free to call Marines, "stupid sycophants" to their faces, but I pity the fools who would do so."
Also, perhaps something like, "I have never understood why Republicans so hate the military, and insult them at every opportunity."

One of these things is not like the other. It's 1) fiction, and 2) set in the 1860s.
"Powell could be heard saying, The masks are total bullcrap. You guys just need to get out there and live. Get arrestedits fine."

(25,471 posts)"In yet another video, she stands outside a broken window, shouting instructions through the bullhorn to rioters inside. Powell says, Ive been in the other room, and appears to outline a plan involving breaking a pane of glass to get into another part of the Capitol. Powell said, regarding her knowledge of the buildings layout, Anything that was said was figured out as time went on. It wasnt like there was a map or anything. "

"There's also two doors in the other room. One in the rear, and one to the right as you go in."
"So people should probably coordinate together if you're going to take this building."

(6,477 posts)Since she had the hint of a midwest vowel shift but it wasn't that pronounced. I mentioned Ohio and Western PA.
Turned out I had it backwards: she was from California but moved to Western PA in her teens. It has a similar effect on the accent. People who were saying she sounded like Boebert's mother (from Florida) were really hallucinating.

(2,785 posts)Why can't they just come out and say it? The reason right wing nuts believe all of this stuff is, because they were already inclined to believe it. The were already inclined to believe it, because they already held resentments against entire groups of people either consciously or sub-consciously. So they made a conscious decision to believe whatever negative is sad about people they already didn't like to begin with no matter how outlandish or atrocious. Why we just can't tell it like it is? It the truth. Instead of trying to portray these people as victims who just got suckered in.

(14,573 posts)fair trial, and then imprison her for an appropriate sentence.
We can blame, blame, blame - social media, 'influencers' and so on, but the reality is that she made the decision to go to DC, she made the decision to storm the Capitol, she made the decision to use the battering ram, and whatever else she ended up doing there.
She is guilty of domestic terrorism, and quite possibly conspiracy.
