"I just hope I can become a Mom"
She said that to Katie Porter as she was looking for a place to hide from the insurrectionists bent on killing her.
I see her now as a woman of greater resolve than we have seen from her thus far.
There is policy and there is humanity. My humanity underlies my change of attitude. She puts herself out there for what she believes in. That trait caused her to be a target for the haters. I can't imagine her backing down. That counts for a LOT. We can debate policy later.
But today, simply, I am glad she is on our team.

(302 posts)the riot at the Capital re-traumatized her. Clearly emotional about it.
I was thinking of exactly that when Leslie Stahl did the hatchet job on Nancy Pelosi. How does a reporter--a female!--treat an interviewee so insensitively after being victimized in a crime like that? It shows no awareness or respect for the very real terror they were going through after they were hunted by people who wanted to and probably would have killed them.
The human side of the violence on the Hill cannot be overstated.
Irish_Dem
(81,259 posts)She barely escaped with her life.
Indeed, many of the members of congress were traumatized because they came close to kidnap or death.
The GOP members even refused to wear masks to protect their fellow MOC.
You can see the GOP does not care about any of this, they have no regard for human life.
Whether it be migrants, the American people or their own friends and colleagues.

I see her clearly as a voice of and from our future. She's smart and deep. Just because she's young and pretty doesn't mean she's dumb or shallow.
It's important - and sometimes challenging - not to buy into the caricature the MSM sells us.
I see this around Biden, too. At one time I saw his age as a negative, and I worried about it. Now I see him as a wise elder.

LOL, they weren't taking new people at that time! Here you are again. AOC has blown me away since she came into public service. It takes a pretty weak man to abuse women, and the thing I hate trump for the most is showing that his particular disorder is a lot more common than any of us knew. AOC brought those small people out of the woodwork, with her spunk, her smarts, and her work ethic. My own husband raised a good man, and cherished his daughters. (53,410 posts)When McCain picked Sara Palin at the urging of Bill Krystol who thought she was a rising star governor of Alaska, Steve Schmidt made the best of it. He put Nicolle Wallace on the job of creating an acceptable public image for Palin. His job was to get McCain elected and he probably figured that the VP was little more than a lackey position. Historically thats true, but it changed when Clinton had Al Gore and much more so when Obama had Biden as VP. It also changed when Bush had Cheney. It reverted back to insignificance with Mike Pence, but I think it will change permanently with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
Both Schmidt and Wallace found out she was a loose cannon and dumber than shit and proud of it. Nicolle Wallace knew Palin was a disaster and uncontrollable when she tried to groom her.
Theres a movie called Game Changer which everyone should see to understand the way it was. Woody Harrelson played the part of Steve Schmidt.

(27,461 posts)McCain wanted Lieberman up to a couple days before the convention and was upset he couldnt have him.

(53,410 posts)It does look in the video as if Steve Schmidt was the main person who decided, but evidently MCCain had already met her and there seem to have been more people involved. There is another response to my post below based on the book named Game Changer. See post 119.
It doesnt look like anyone had any knowledge of her off the wall crazy. Its not like her personality type is common. I can understand that a quick and superficial knowledge of her wouldnt expose just how extreme she was. Now, of course, weve seen much more of these radical people.
stopdiggin
(15,463 posts)Anyone with half a noodle (and it's debatable whether that group included McCain himself) knew that Sarah was dumber than dog doo. But that's not necessarily a disqualification in politics as Schmidt and everybody else understood. And Sarah checked a couple of (potential) boxes. The surprise came when everybody found out she wasn't even "trainable" (as a small minority of dogs are -- and the muzzle didn't work very well either)
betsuni
(29,076 posts)McCain had met Palin earlier in the year at a National Governors Association meeting in Washington. McCain said he "liked the cut of Sarah's jib. She's damn impressive." The other campaign manager, Davis, in charge of McCain's VP process, found a video of Palin and was "bowled over." He showed Schmidt and he was too. But they'd never met her. McCain had. There was little time, they needed their choice to be a surprise. It's silly to blame Schmidt for Palin.
"It was now thirty-six hours from the campaign's Friday target for unveiling its veepstakes winner. ... She had never met Schmidt. She had never met Salter. Now, in a rush, against a deadline, with little background information, the two McCain advisors had to determine if she was ready for the big stage." She seemed to be, she was very confident.

I am on the left of the party. I supported Elizabeth Warren, I supported her policies.
The Democratic Socialists of America, the Sunrise Movement, the Justice Democrats, all mounted a vicious, unprincipled campaign of lies against Warren. They wanted Bernie. They wanted power. They did not give a damn about outcomes.
AOC is their public face. The modus operandi is attacking the Democratic Party. They continue a corrosive, guerrilla war against all those who would get in the way of their rise to power.
If AOC renounced the Justice 'Democrats' et al., I might take her seriously. There is a well worn path from insurgent to leader. AOC ain't on it.

(54,405 posts)I will add this to AOC's defence of Warren (when the neocon Jennifer Rubin smeared Warren with a misogynistic framing after a debate). Not only that, but it was a defence by AOC of a competitor running against AOC's endorsed choice for POTUS, which further shows her sincerity.
I really tire of these attempts (obviously not you, Dem4Life) by some to start up or rekindle a divisive Democratic slow-burn, never-ending internal war simply to take shots at (in thsi case) an elected Democratic woman who just went through a nightmarish episode at the hand of Trumpian seditious white nationalist vermin. So ironic as they are doing exactly what some of the entities they claim to dislike (or outright hate) are doing in terms of spinning up division.
AOC defends Elizabeth Warren against 'misogynistic trope' after Democratic debate
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-election/aoc-warren-misogynstic-trope-democratic-debate-bloomberg-attack-a9348796.html
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has defended Elizabeth Warren against criticism of her Las Vegas debate performance, saying a critique calling the Massachusetts senator mean and angry was a misogynistic trope. Ms Ocasio-Cortez, who has endorsed Ms Warrens opponent Bernie Sanders, argued in a series of tweets that the Massachusetts senator's searing attacks on billionaire Michael Bloomberg which led to considerable positive media attention and a strong day of fundraising for her showed she is strong, and that some of the responses have been sexist.
Warren was not mean, nor angry. She was effective, Ms Ocasio-Cortez said. And by the way, we are allowed to be angry about racial profiling, Youre allowed to be angry about sexual harassment. Or at big banks committing fraud against single parents. Anger at injustice is quite appropriate.
Ms Ocasio-Cortez continued: Its truly time to retire the misogynistic trope that angry men are powerful, yet angry women are unhinged. Its such gaslighting nonsense, she said. You SHOULD be mad at abuse of power. The real question is how one channels that energy into positive change that creates justice.

I have no desire to support the Just Us Democrats attacks on the Democratic Party and I do not support the Just Us Democrat goal of forcing Joe Biden to adopt their policies. I was amused to see that this group failed to meet the fundraising goals for January even after lowering their target. Yes AOC is the face of this group and AOC is mentioned in many of the Just Us Democrat emails.
BTW, all three of my kids were Warren supporters. I attended and met Joe at two fund raisers in 2019. At one of these fundraisers, I met the parents of my middle child's best friend and we compared notes about our children's favorite candidate. I texted my middle child that the parents of her best friend was at this fundraiser and she responded that she knew this because her friend's parents texted her that they met me. My middle child and her best friend agreed that their parents were "shits". All three kids now agree that Warren could not have beaten trump (trump came within 45,000 votes of flipping the electoral college).

They're out of step with Democrats, the Democratic party, and our nation. They're especially out of step with reality. They cause more division and distrust within our own ranks, and that only serves to WEAKEN our party. Anything that divides and weakens us, only serves to benefit the GOP.

I think she will be Great, with a capital G. But I am very leery of all the adoration. When I see that, I look for the flaws to maintain a balanced perspective. And because everybody LOVES her so much, when I make note of flaws, people go crazy. Cultism is not healthy.

My thought is that Reagan changed the arc of the US and not in a good way.
We need a new FDR we shall see if its Biden or someone down the line, someone to change tax policy and rates where they were from FDR all the way to Reagan, which includes Republicans Eisenhower, Nixon, and Ford.
I think a lot of folks see something like a 70% upper tax bracket as applying to someones entire income. It doesnt, it just kicks in after you reach astronomical levels of incomes.

Could we not just take our leaders (and AOC is certainly one of those) as ordinary human beings -- with attendant (and mostly forgivable) flaws, and occasional missteps?

(54,405 posts)her in ideological stance from becoming POTUS for many decades, if ever. I truly have to laugh when she and others are labelled 'far left' (even by certain factions within our own party), as not a single Dem (or Bernie) would be anything other than a basic social democratic, a bog standard centre left pol in most all other advanced western nations. Pretty much every major initiative and programme that earn them the faux 'far left' tag in the US are already (and have been for ages) in place in most of the core EU nations. Not only that, but many centre right parties over here support many things that cause so many to scream and pull their hair out and howl 'commie!'.
The US political spectrum and labelling systems are artificially slid to the right to a gobsmacking degree, and the nation as a whole truly suffers for it. The pitiful 7.25 USD federal minimum wage for instance, finally kicked in 11 and half years ago. That 7.25 usd in terms of purchasing power then (2009), is now only around 5.45 usd in purchasing power in 2021, due to inflation, and that is NOT counting vital things that have increased FAR beyond the overall rate of inflation, such as healthcare, housing (in so many areas), and tertiary educational costs.

(54,405 posts)of miles away. I have a large sphere of influence in real life with a lot of expats I know. You will know I have truly given up when I renounce my US citizenship (which is costing me a tonne in double taxation at this point, as the US is basically the only remotely major nation that taxes foreign-earned income (above a certain point, which I have now reached and went well past) for non resident US citizens. This 2020 tax year bill is going to be brutal for me unfortunately (I already pay a shedload in Swedish income tax). The one thing that will instantly cause me to renounce is if the SCOTUS rules that my marriage (I am a married lesbian) is invalid in the US.

(560 posts)Oh, now that AOC expresses a desire to have child she has value to you?
I've had respect for her from the beginning. Whether or not her future includes motherhood is irrelevant.

But she didn't! It's in some version of the new bill. Only $2b.... Used to be enough to pay for avg burial. (She introduced in May). For some reason it got buried in committee

She has been a stellar public servant. Maybe her delivery isn't polished but you can't argue with the substance or her intentions.
I have long thought people's negative opinions of her are rooted in misogyny.
