Trump's anti-impeachment submission says this about his wildly false claims about mass election fraud: "Insufficient evidence exists upon which a reasonable jurist could conclude that the 45th Presidents statements were accurate or not, and he therefore denies they were false."

The Trump team's submission focuses on the argument that this is all unconstitutional because Trump is no longer president. But it also defends some of his key behavior - saying, for example, that asking Raffensperger to "find" votes didn't mean what Trump critics say it means.
Trump team: "It is denied that the phrase 'if you dont fight like hell youre not going to have a country anymore' had anything to do with the action at the Capitol as it was clearly about the need to fight for election security in general, as evidenced by the recording..."
Also from the Trump anti-impeachment submission: "It is denied President Trump made any effort to subvert the certification of the results of the 2020 Presidential election."

(8,543 posts)So the President of the United States told his followers that the election was "stolen from you", the "country will be destroyed", and "if you don't fight like Hell, you're not going to have a country anymore" all based on insufficient evidence?

The "I can't be impeached because I'm a liar" defense overlooks the fact that he is impeached. This whole Senate trial is about the United States not having to go through any more crap if he runs for President again. It's about holding him responsible for attempting a coup against our Government. So, his followers go to jail, but he goes to live at Mar a Lago?
Senators know that he can be tried after he's out of office. That argument will not fly. So, they are looking for reasoning, however false, that can be quoted in the evening news as being the reason they did not vote to convict. And, he isn't even going to jail after this is over. He walks away, after having almost completely destroyed the US. My word, this is so unfair.
And he absolutely DID threaten the GA SoS with retribution if he didn't cooperate. There is no other way to take that.
