(3,695 posts)Otherwise there is NO way a Gov in a deep red state would come out with such energetic support for Biden's bill even though WV desperately needs every penny they can get from the government.

(34,407 posts)His voting record is far more often with Dems than with Reps, and given the nature of West Virginia, Im amazed that he continues to get their votes. He has to do some fancy dancing.
This is a win for Dems.

(7,271 posts)when it comes to relief then his ambitions to look like he's politically conservative. And to remind him that the filibuster is a jim crow rule, and does he want to continue to be associated with this anti-democratic game?
But something tells me it would be a complete waste of time.

(22,911 posts)I don't think he ever actually threatened to block it. He might have played harder to get without that local pressure, which might have meant holding out for some concessions. But Manchin has always been far more supportive of a significant Covid relief package than any of the Repubs were.

(6,373 posts)West Virginia is suffering tremendously. How are you supposed to go back to your constituents and say "I fought...to get you LESS!" and expect to win re-election?

(7,447 posts)he will point to things like the higher cap on earnings for benefits and say I fought to cut that down so that YOU would get it but not people who don't need it, etc etc.
He is a clear target now. The Dem Senator in one of the most republican states in the country. He's trying to burnish his centrist credentials now to weather that storm. I'm not defending him, just understanding him.
Ultimately, he was always going to be on-board with the majority of it, but he apparently feels he needs to make a show that he's not just going along with everything.

(6,373 posts)It's an overwhelmingly popular bill amongst both Democrats and Republicans. The only people who don't approve are a handful of people on the far right.
Voting NOT to advance it probably would have hurt him in 2024 more than voting for the 19T package will.

(6,373 posts)I dont think that America can go wrong being too high, Justice said during Mondays West Virginia COVID-19 briefing. I think, today, Americas got to go to the higher number.
Trying to be, per se, fiscally responsible at this point in time with what weve got going on in this country, if we actually throw away some money right now, so what? the governor told CNNs Poppy Harlow.
