Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine gives around 92% protection against Covid-19, late stage trial results published in The Lancet reveal.
It has also been deemed to be safe - and offer complete protection against hospitalisation and death.
The vaccine was initially met with some controversy after being rolled out before the final trial data had been released.
But scientists said its benefit has now been demonstrated.
It joins the ranks of proven vaccines alongside Pfizer, Oxford/AstraZeneca, Moderna and Janssen.

J&J is of course a single dose vaccine but that might be making it less effective.

And it was particularly effective at stopping severe disease, preventing 85% of severe infections and 100% of hospitalizations and deaths."

(16,356 posts)people will be spared the worst effects of this devastating disease. I applaud the Russian scientists for their work in making this happen, just as I applaud our own and our allies' scientists.

(4,677 posts)The article strikes me as extremely credulous. The idea that Putin's government couldn't massage data gathered in its own capital seems a bit naive.

(15,909 posts)...because all the motivations were there to claim a vaccine success for show, and all the ability to hide failure and fake success were in place too. It just seemed way too rushed.
So it's amazing, and a pleasant surprise, to have independent confirmation of the vaccine's efficacy.
That said, I still think it's pretty clear that Russia must have cut corners on safety, and if the vaccine is both safe and effective, there's luck to thank for that too, not just technical skill.

(47,365 posts)is not going to ask for FDA approval. So chances of us getting it is zero (whether we would get it or not).

But it does mean one more supplier for possibly many other parts of the world, and that's a good thing.

My grandfather and my dad probably owe much of their careers to Sputnik.
That little satellite scared the shit out of "conservative" U.S.A. so badly it convinced them to spend some serious money on science and technology.
