Russia's Sputnik V vaccine has 92% efficacy in trial

Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine gives around 92% protection against Covid-19, late stage trial results published in The Lancet reveal.

It has also been deemed to be safe - and offer complete protection against hospitalisation and death.

The vaccine was initially met with some controversy after being rolled out before the final trial data had been released.

But scientists said its benefit has now been demonstrated.

It joins the ranks of proven vaccines alongside Pfizer, Oxford/AstraZeneca, Moderna and Janssen.

This vaccine is not an mRNA vaccine. It is more like the AstraZeneca and J&J vaccines. Klaralven Feb 2021 #2

different vectors for first and second dose.
J&J is of course a single dose vaccine but that might be making it less effective.

"In a study of more than 43,000 people, the vaccine prevented 66% of moderate to severe cases of Covid-19, according to a company statement Friday. And it was particularly effective at stopping severe disease, preventing 85% of severe infections and 100% of hospitalizations and deaths."

people will be spared the worst effects of this devastating disease. I applaud the Russian scientists for their work in making this happen, just as I applaud our own and our allies' scientists.

The article strikes me as extremely credulous. The idea that Putin's government couldn't massage data gathered in its own capital seems a bit naive.

over the years.

Here's one they had to retract about our old friend hydroxychloroquine.

And incidentally, I was referring to the BBC article. I haven't read the original Lancet article.

...because all the motivations were there to claim a vaccine success for show, and all the ability to hide failure and fake success were in place too. It just seemed way too rushed.

So it's amazing, and a pleasant surprise, to have independent confirmation of the vaccine's efficacy.

That said, I still think it's pretty clear that Russia must have cut corners on safety, and if the vaccine is both safe and effective, there's luck to thank for that too, not just technical skill.

But it does mean one more supplier for possibly many other parts of the world, and that's a good thing.

Sputnik indeed.

My grandfather and my dad probably owe much of their careers to Sputnik.

That little satellite scared the shit out of "conservative" U.S.A. so badly it convinced them to spend some serious money on science and technology.

In Star Trek utopia all those brilliant engineers of Earth are working together for the common good.
