I lived in MS for two years in the 1990's. To say that LGBT life in MS was pretty hard, is an understatement. Pete got both MS senator's votes for heading the DOT. I currently live in the television market of WRAL, which was Jesse Helms' tv station, both of my senators voted for Pete. I was 25 when the government stopped screening LGB personnel from serving in government. I was 30 when an ambassador was rejected simply for being a gay man. And today, Pete got 84 votes to be head of the DOT. Outside of crackpot senators from backward regions, Pete got huge levels of support. Only three senators from outside of the former confederacy (there are 78 such senators) voted no with one not voting (though I assume he would be a yes). Even within the confederacy Pete got the votes of both senators from 4 states (VA, NC, GA, and the aforementioned MS) and one each from AK, TX, SC, and LA. He wound up getting slightly over half of confederate senators to vote for him. The non confederates who voted against came from OK, KS, and MO (one each). Honestly, that is pretty incredible.

(20,629 posts)ones that are operating under the delusion that they're going to become the next President. This vote was something for their "bona fides", that they can wave around as a "badge of honor" when they're campaigning in front of their homophobic base.
