Rep. Adam Schiff is quietly lobbying Gov. Gavin Newsom and his allies to appoint him Californias next attorney general, according to people familiar with the matter.
Rep. Adam Schiff is seen walking through Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol.
Schiff lobbying Newsom to become California's next attorney general
If Newsom selects Schiff, House Dems would temporarily give up a seat in their slim 221-211 majority.

(14,959 posts)They would probably have a special election in several months time, but there's no guarantee on when it would be at the moment.

(7,278 posts)I didn't know Schiff had his eye on that position, but I'm glad he does and glad he's going after it now. I believe Schiff represents Sherman Oaks ? If so, it should be easy to replace with another Dem.

(7,715 posts)I hope Dianne Feinstein retires and lets Gavin Newsom pick her replacement.
I have nothing against her, but I am very concerned about the recall movement against Governor Newsom. I would far prefer that Gavin gets the chance to pick Feinstein's replacement than a Republican governor.
For the CA folks (and others) on DU, can we try to coalesce and figure a way to defend Governor Newsom?

(53,765 posts)there will be republican governor of California. Dems way outnumber them. I wish Feinstein would retire and let Newsom appoint Schiff to the Senate. That would move a senator past her prime out without disrupting our slim majority in the Senate, and in a few months a special election would replace Schiff with a new Dem in the House.

(7,278 posts)I've been around long enough to remember a string of republican governors going back to Reagan.
When I moved to California Reagan was Governor :
33. Ronald Reagan (1967-1975)
34. Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown (1975-1983)
35. George Deukmejian (1983-1991)
36. Pete Wilson (1991-1999)
37. Gray Davis (1999-2003)
38. Arnold Schwarzenegger (2003-2011)
39. Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown (2011-2019)
40. Gavin Newsom (2019-Present)

(4,673 posts)the ballot and how the votes are split. Its entirely possible for a Repub to win, and is their only chance in this state, via the recall ballot. This is why Reups want this, and even some dems who want to run but do it without primarying Newsom.
The recall is a scary chance for Repubs and far from impossible.
Hopefully Dems, even those not crazy about Newsom, would not vote for the recall for this reason.

Consider what having been a California AG position has led to, recently.

(25,962 posts)It would be wonderful if Diane F. could be persuaded to step down, and Schiff could be appointed to her seat. Otherwise, it's disappointing to see him leave the House right now. We need him for at least another year or two.

(25,962 posts)He is entitled to take whatever career steps he feels are appropriate for him, and I do wish him well. He's served in the House for quite some time now, and he's done a great job. He would be sorely missed.
