This lady was committing a crime. I have no problem with this decision https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/no-charges-recommended-officer-who-shot-ashli-babbitt-during-capitol-n1256522?fbclid=IwAR1ZJy1zQINW3nr2WsMU_ApUZ_QvMT_nusevCWUE33WBnKIz4YQuexk2RBs
The Wall Street Journal first reported that police investigators have recommended the officer not be charged, although the U.S. Attorney's Office will make the final decision on the matter.
Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran and ardent supporter of former President Donald Trump, was shot during the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol.
The pro-Trump rioters wanted to stop the certification of President Joe Bidens win in the 2020 presidential election and were threatening members of Congress and then-Vice President Mike Pence, who were evacuated as the mob made its way closer to and eventually inside the Capitol Building.

(26,579 posts)That's what white privilege looks like.
All the seditionists who were present with her should be charged for her murder. That's how it normally works. Not surprised that they're going soft on them though.

(3,635 posts)The fact that they got that far into the building without shots being fired is a testament to white privilege and the cops' right wing bias.
The officer who shot this insurrectionst woman is a hero as it prevented the mob from getting into the Speaker's Lobby and possibly taking hostages and/or killing members of Congress.

(31,261 posts)The new Chief apparently was obligated to follow the process.
If it was a thorough review of the shooting, I would be ok with that, it should be done for every officer involved shooting.

(8,329 posts)I am glad they followed the process and I am happy that they found this to be justified. That said, the officer involved still has the terrible burden to bear that he took a life. He took in in the performance of his duty and did what he had to do, but he still has to live with taking a life.
I hope he finds comfort in the fact that his action saved both lives and our democracy.

Still, I feel bad he was put in a situation where deadly force was necessary. I hope he's doing OK.

(12,646 posts)both physically and more importantly, psychologically to the crowd behind her. If she had gotten through, they would all have swarmed in behind her, even if the police in the hallway started shooting. The police would have had to then hold the hallway, without the admittedly slight protection of those heavy doors.
It was critical to hold those doors until everyone was cleared out of the House chambers. She couldn't be allowed to breach the doors.

(21,127 posts)That more people weren't killed is kind of amazing given the gravity of the situation. There are plenty of self-defense, and defense-of-others arguments to be had here. This is not so much when police kill minorities with reckless abandon with the excuse of being in fear for their life.

snip-"The officer, a lieutenant, was essentially serving as a potential last line of defense between the rioters and members of Congress, thus providing some justification for his actions and falling well short of the standard necessary to charge a police officer with a civil-rights violation for a shooting, the people said.
Thats where he drew the line in the sand, a fellow Capitol Police officer said, adding that the lieutenant, whose police powers have been suspended, is expected to return to his previous status, though he is afraid of being retaliated against by Trump supporters."

I have no sympathy for her.
I have a great of sympathy for the officer

(2,212 posts)Now that the necessary review is completed, can we get the officer a commendation? He remained calm and steadfast while being vastly outnumbered by a screaming mob. He performed his duty perfectly, while being denied the kind of support he ought to have had from those in charge. Many would have failed under those circumstances. He deserves recognition.
