Fox News falls to third place

"SNIP......
"We are lost," a Fox News insider remarked to me recently, and there are lots of data points to back up the assertion.
Nielsen numbers for the month of January were released on Tuesday, and Fox ranked third in the three-horse cable news race for the first time since 2001. Furthermore, CNN was the No. 1 channel across all of cable.
Think about it this way: January was one of the biggest months of political news in a generation, yet Fox couldn't capitalize. Instead of competing by promoting correspondents and putting news coverage front and center, the network prioritized ever more outrageous, ever more extreme opinion. "Tucker Carlson Tonight" essentially expanded to "Tucker Carlson Day and Night."
That may very well prove to be Fox's best bet from a business POV. "Win back a base audience that disdains the news by ignoring the news and affirming their views 24/7" makes sense from an economic, if not ethical, standpoint. But for the time being Fox is floundering in third place, and it's shocking to see. The lack of editorial leadership is palpable, according to numerous sources at the network. And even in its weakened ratings state, Fox is reflecting and propelling the radicalization of the GOP...

(42,770 posts)happened on Jan 6, we will get some Fox shift. Agree, Optimist! But, all news viewership down overall most recently. Makes sense. CNN had the biggest drop, but still in lead.
Don't know about other people, but to me, CNN has always been the go-to place for info when something big is happening just because they seem to have the resources and cameras out there.

(2,343 posts)some after November 3 and some after January 6 when all hope was lost.
When Trump won in 2016, the last thing I wanted to do was watch the news. The news hour after I got home from work was replaced with Jeopardy, Andy Griffith, and Seinfeld.
One of my conservative friends made a comment last week that he was 'checking out' on news until the 2022 election.i guess it's true because he knew nothing about the Gamestop deal or Uni of Tennessee firing their football coach (a big deal here in SEC country!).

(42,770 posts)definitely don't want to watch the winner happy and dismantling what your guy did!
And, for us, there's a relief knowing we've got good & competent people in charge. We don't have to watch a con man and worry every day.
PS. I didn't know TN coach got fired ! Bama fan here.

(3,635 posts)After years of kissing up to Trump they began to criticize him and the Repubs much more, especially once he began his destructive Big Lie. The hosts probably started to wakeup to the reality that 'oh shit, Trump really does want to end democracy'...
CNN is still too both-siderist. MSNBC is much better overall especially the evening/primetime lineups.

(7,429 posts)Is reflecting and propelling the radicalization of the GOP yielding weakened ratings?
I always thought that Fox News viewers liked their bigotry and anti-democracy views well veiled. A radicalized GOP will result in viewers just turning the TV off or switching to the Hoarders channel. Some, but not many, will switch to the other two cable news channels.
If FNC viewers simply stopped watching TV altogether, they'd be more well-informed that FNC viewers, anyway.

(118,492 posts)explain people leaving. Turning the channel is easier than changing the party on your voter registration and a few have done the latter. That being said i have not seen data yet on how the GOP is split on Trump & conspiracies vs not.

(3,695 posts)Now they find that they are not loony enough for many of their former viewers and too loony for a small number that finally realized they'd been sold lies in support of Trump.
