The evening news in the early days of May 1970 eventually led to a complete and devastating collapse of my earlier idealism, from which I only gradually began to recover
The recovery process was complicated: I needed to rebuild my views from a contradictory mix of cynical suspicion and hopeful pragmatism, while trying never to believe either fully
I tried a variety of volunteer strategies, ranging from organizing for public education, lobbying officials and commenting on regulatory affairs, community work, political campaign efforts, and GOTV
I still think all these are needed; and I still think none is sufficient alone
But after 6 January, I find the situation even more urgent; and I expect the urgency may remain for the rest of my days
We have an advantage, when we confront our present danger: a large number of the people, who are arrayed against us, are profoundly confused. But not all of them are confused -- some are criminally intelligent. We will not be served well by simplistic thinking now: some real discernment is needed
