According to a press release from Rep. Pete DeFazio (D-OR), Reps. Peter DeFazio (OR-04), Tom Reed (NY-23), Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), Colin Allred (TX-32) and Senators Steve Daines (R-MT) and Brian Schatz (D-HI) today announced reintroduction of the USPS Fairness Act, bipartisan legislation to provide the United States Postal Service (USPS) much-needed financial relief by ending the agencys burdensome prefunding mandate on future retiree health benefits.
The purpose of the legislation, which passed the House last year with more than 300 votes is to end the mandate that the Postal Service must prefund retiree health benefits decades in advance. The insidious mandate was put in place in a 2006 law to bankrupt the Postal Service, and fulfill one of the Republican Partys biggest privatization fantasies.

(5,707 posts)but the damage DeJoy did in so short a time was genuinely crippling and will not be undone overnight--especially since DeJoy remains in his position.

(76 posts)i thought for a long time this was just the right wing's doing, but both sides were in on the sabotage.
hopefully this lawless outrage will be undone, in the same fashion as it's birth. when that happens, it will be a good day in the US.

(269 posts)I agree with your comment, but introducing this thought is how the Post Office got derailed.
Does the Defense Department make money? Does Social Security? Medicare?
The Post Office is critical to our democracy.
And yes, the poor people of this country would be well served by this banking -- unless you support payday loan sharks.
Gheeez.

(10,252 posts)Article I, Section 8, Clause 7 of the United States Constitution, known as the Postal Clause or the Postal Power, empowers Congress "To establish Post Offices and Post Roads." Our first Postmaster General was Benjamin Franklin, and the PMG was a cabinet post.
