Important bite from Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) just now on COVID relief bill: "If it's $1.9 trillion, so be it."
"If it's a little smaller than that and we find a targeted need, then that's what we're going to be."

(7,281 posts)Is he on medication? wtf is it about his whiplash on again, off again?
I suspect the bit about his not supporting the $15 min wage caused a huge backlash among the voters of WV. I mean, one of the poorest states in the country, suffering from opioid crises for years devastating the lives impacted by it, I understand they're doing well with the Covid crises, but still, opposing the bill unless rejected a $15 min wage? seriously messed up.

(24,455 posts)For the reason's you mentioned, I really don't understand this guy's political calculus. He could have his fair share of the stimulus, especially considering the transition the energy market is undergoing with regards to coal.

(7,281 posts)Something is just too weird. So many other opportunities to pitch a fit about bi-partisanship, or the lack of it before now and the end of Biden's first term. but on something like this, really?

(7,281 posts)Maybe math isn't Manchin's strong suit. ? It isn't for me either, but I do know that 60% poverty suggests majority of the people live in conditions that a $15 min would mean for their lives. And I think they might even vote,

(11,631 posts)Wasnt the interview yesterday in which he insisted it had to be bipartisan on foxnews?
Joe likes to tell folks what they want to hear a little I think.
Id say watch what he does not what he says and he tends to vote with the party most of the time when it matters.

This relief package is extremely popular among the electorate including republican voters and i just dont see how this can hurt him politically if he goes along with it.

(90,335 posts)... minimum wage makes sense on its face but looking at his CV package logic I'm sure that's full of illogic too

(58,648 posts)the full $15 doesn't kick in for two years, at least.
Hell, it's already about 10 years behind inflation.

(90,335 posts)... makes senses so the MW should be graduated relative to minimum living for each county for instance.

(19,059 posts)Very reasonable to me. If they can target it a little better for those who really need it and save a couple hundred Billion it's still a great bill that will accomplish what it's meant to. If that's what it takes to pass it, good. If that means it gets a few Republican votes, good too.

(3,245 posts)for whatever it's worth, Manchin does find himself in a pretty good position, not only personally, but also for WV.
There are alot of federal organizations in West Virginia, thanks in great part to the late Senator Byrd. His passing took a great deal of their ability to continue with that.
Chances are that the amount of new federal agencies opening operations in the state has diminished.
It's just as possible that Manchin not only sees this as a way to become more relevant within the state.

(13,970 posts)in 2022 if the $1400 is targeted more than the last two. People who got the previous stimulus but miss out on this one may very well take it out on Dems in the next elections. Plus its better that some get it who dont need it than vice-versa.

(5,693 posts)On Fox, he sounds like he's ready to screw the Dems and Biden, on CNN he sounds like he's still weighing his options, and on MSNBC he's all ready to give in and vote for the damn thing.
