Why Is Taxing Wealth Accumulators Like Workers Never Discussed?

Elizabeth and Bernie have mentioned it a couple times, but it is like taboo.

Total silence, when we just added $8 trillion to the debt in 4 years, and more coming.

The 1% are still raking it in.

Wake the f up folks.

Why the silence?

They tax cars based on value. Property taxes, too.

So why is it so strange to tax millions of dollars worth of stocks and bonds?

Which is what I make in some years.

Our tax system sucks.

It is set up so the insanely rich write off everything, and pass on their wealth to their heirs.

What do you think all those high six figure consulting jobs or speaking fees that politicians get when they are between political gigs? Do you think it's because of their unique qualifications or that people are really interested in what they have to say? Or is it an investment that will pay dividends down the road? Same with all the PAC contributions. They are spending this money because they know they will make it back and then some. It's why they've been vastly increasing their wealth in both absolute and in relative terms for decades.

They say- 'In our case, we have inherited estates that are valued in access of what the limit would be. (Assets, houses etc included) we already pay taxes on it. We could not afford to pay .02 per every dollar of the estate, on top of what already is owed by regular taxation, while paying to maintain the property, farm equipment, fencing, infrastructure, the houses etc.
It is not the responsibility of the wealthy to pay more taxes for simply being wealthy. That is discrimination.'

They are referring to Elizabeth Warrens tax plan. I guess the more money you have the more money you want............

note I am not saying it is for sure unconstitutional just that it is reasonably argued that it is. Which, given our current court, is very problematic. For the same reason we had to have an amendment that permitted income taxes, it is possible we need one for wealth taxes. I did see a very good idea though on Slate magazine. Pass a law with the wealth tax and an alternative tax (very high marginal rate) that would take effect is the wealth tax is struck down. The high marginal rates are clearly constitutional as is passing a law that has an plan B.

There was a study of legislation (really disheartening) that showed that the top 10% of wealth and income earners get their preferred legislation passed at 90% whereas those below that level only have about a 30% success rate.
