By Tommy Christopher Feb 3rd, 2021, 10:54 am
Support for a 2024 run by former President Donald Trump has cratered by 20 points since December, in a stunning poll that illustrates the political bind many Republicans find themselves in.
The new survey from Echelon Insights found that only 45 percent of Republicans would like to see Donald Trump run for president in 2024, down from 65 percent in December.
The poll also found solid majority support for Trumps impeachment and removal, and slightly higher support for banning him from ever running for federal office again an action that can only be taken if Trump is convicted by the Senate.
Overall, 57 percent of voters want to ban Trump for life (versus 53 percent who want him convicted in the Senate), while 30 percent of Republicans say the same. Only 21 percent of Republicans want him convicted in the Senate.

(25,464 posts)His approval ratings have cratered. As I often said in the days following January 6th, his political career ended that day.
That's why prohibiting him from holding future office would be largely meaningless. He'll never win another primary.

(2,343 posts)Assuming they stick with the ban, theres no way he can mount a return. And the media surely wont give him publicity. Hes effectively shunned.
I agree that prohibiting him office wont mean much politically. Still, it would be akin to twisting the knife, and that part I like!
TwilightZone
(25,464 posts)What was more shocking than this poll was the report that came out that said that misinformation about election fraud dropped nearly 75% shortly after he was banned. I knew that Trump was responsible for a lot of it, but he was feeding the vast majority.

(2,343 posts)Thinking its good to sometimes know what the enemy thinks. After the big Twitter purge on Jan 7, most have gone dormant. I think most left on their own, but maybe some were closed by Jacks crew. Timeline is quieter now and those that remain are nicer.
The funny part is a lot of them were urging others to bail on Twitter and head to Parler. Im sure Trump was headed over there. But, Mr. Bezos fixed that! Funnier than hell.

(16,950 posts)You are exactly right again.
Trump could only hold on as long as the bully schtick held up and now he has no platform. People are realizing that his incompetence overcame the bully act and theres nowhere to go now.

But he came back in 1930 and ended up destroying the Reimer Republic in 1932.
Trumpanzee MUST be held accountable and not be allowed to hold office ever again. He also must not be allowed to finance White Supremicist Candidates, or in any way financial or otherwise influence politics in the USA.
I don't care how it is done, just do it.
The Orange Killer Clown is a murderous treasonous vile criminal and if he gets off scott free, or with only a wrist slap, Our Democracy is finished. May take 4-8 years, but it is finished.

(5,801 posts)he's laying low only because of the upcoming Senate trial, but plotting and scheming for afterwards.

(3,911 posts)If he can run, he can fundraise. And right now, he could use the cash.
TwilightZone
(25,464 posts)He's pulled in quarter of a million dollars since the election, most of which he can essentially pocket.
His idiot followers will send in the cash regardless of what he does. He'd be better off not running and just going on Newsmax.

(1,955 posts)This is very important. If the air goes out of his balloon, the fear will be a lot less for senate Republicans. They will be more apt to vote their conscience and convict the POS bully.

(82,849 posts)Somehow the major media are going to have to re-inflate that balloon, lest current Republican office holders actually accrue some responsibility for doing their fucking jobs. Lord knows we can't have that!
I agree with VarryOn's post that cutting off Trump's social media platforms has had a crushing effect on Trump's popularity. I will leave it to others to judge the collaborative culpability of Twitter and Facebook for providing those platforms to Trump for so long, and how many of the hundreds of thousands of Covid-19 deaths and disabilities can be laid at their doorstep.

(3,497 posts)without Trump constantly tending to his cult, they will start to drift. These numbers are going to continue to drop as time goes on

(16,616 posts)This is why in an actual cult the leader physically isolates the followers from their families. In this age of Putin and Trump, the state-run media is supposed to be the babysitter. But that got screwed up in Trump's case because he turned against Fox News and now Newsmax and OAN, facing lawsuits, have had to drop some of the fabulism and fawning devotion to Trump.
And Trump is also hemorrhaging support from people who voted for him but were never "all in" with the cult.

(25,464 posts)The report that came out that said that misinformation about election fraud dropped 75% after he was dumped by Twitter backs that completely. Most of them don't have independent motivation. They want to be led (astray).

For my money, this is far too little, much too late from this group. No one can claim to be this disconnected from the news or this blind to events. While its welcome, more has to happen here concerning their vote and their involvement in the country and understanding of events.

(19,038 posts)Dems everywhere need to stop calling Republicans by their name, call the the Trump Party and call them Trumpsters. Do it everywhere, even in Congress. Just like Reps have called it the Democrat Party for a long time, call them the Trump Party.
Branding works! Tie Trump around their necks like an anchor.

(15,204 posts)A lot of people were happy Trump won the Republican primaries in 2016, because that poisonous clown would be so easy to beat.
Look how that turned out.
Of course, it is less likely Trump could pull it off a second time, but I'd prefer he never has a ghost of a chance again.

(15,204 posts)...from the clinically insane, people who thought you were asking "Do you need to take a dump?", and people who lie to pollsters for yucks, is shockingly HIGH to me.
I have yet to see a low for support of Trump that's comfortably low enough.
BobTheSubgenius
(11,563 posts)How he can enjoy a support of more than single digits is beyond me. Not only is he, in my view, the worst president of all time, bar non, he is the worst thing to happen in American politics and public life since the Civil War.
Other things have been BAD, no doubt about it, but they were, as far as I can remember, the result(s) of the confluence of many factors - the Crash of 29, for example.
This is all him. Snivelling toads surrounded him aided and abetted him, but he was a colossus at the center of it all.
