Line Cooks Have the Highest Risk of Dying During Pandemic, Plus Other Riskiest Jobs: Study

By Cory Stieg, CNBC Published February 3, 2021

A new study from the University of California, San Francisco suggests that line cooks have the highest risk of mortality during the Covid pandemic even more than healthcare workers.

For the study, which hasn't been peer-reviewed yet, researchers analyzed California death certificates for working-age people 18 to 65, during the first seven months of the pandemic. Then they looked at how the number of deaths increased in that time frame compared to pre-pandemic times.

Line cooks had a 60% increase in mortality associated with the pandemic.

The top five occupations that had higher than a 50% mortality rate increase during the pandemic include cooks, line workers in warehouses, agricultural workers, bakers and construction laborers.

1. $15 an hour

People don't remember, but there was a time when line cooks in America made decent livings. You could work the grill at your local Diner and have enough pay to rent a small apartment and drive a decent vehicle. Biden and the Dems are trying to bring it back.

2. I am a line cook and this does not surprise me

I had to email my regional manager and get OSHA into my restaurant before the managers would enforce the covid policy. Does not even pay the bills i make over $15 an hour. Labor these days gets eaten by the front of the house so no hours for cooks they run as little as possible and when you protect yourself like i did they put you on the shit list and cut your hours does not matter if you make $20 an hour when you are not given any.

All we get is more work, more suffering, more death for less and less.
