Might it be best to keep Marjorie Taylor Greene around as a pinata?

Last edited Wed Feb 3, 2021, 05:30 PM - Edit history (1)

She's toxic to anybody who isn't MAGA.

Who would you rather be the face of the Republican party-Marjorie Taylor Greene or Mitt Romney?

Here's the thing- Greene is much closer to your median Republican politician than Mitt Romney. We do a great disservice to ourselves to allow Republicans to misrepresent themselves. Your median Republican politician is Marjorie Taylor Greene without the crazy facade. There are 140 Marjorie Taylor Greenes in the House.By cutting her loose they continue the crazy under a false flag of "moderation." A Republican is Marjorie Taylor Greene who knows what he or she is doing.

She just says out loud or to be more precise tweets what the lion's share of her Republican colleagues are thinking.

Her brand of politics should never become “mainstream,” if we can help it. Stop her in her tracks, early.

But given a choice between the two, I’ll take the milquetoast Mr. Romney. He couldn’t fire up gas-soaked dynamite. But, he’d at least be nice.

Greene is a fucking traitor and needs to be treated accordingly.

We ain't playing what-if games here. This is reality. Deal with it.

What would be best is call out these racist and conspiracy nut jobs as unqualified to do more than lick polish the lazy lying steaming pile Hump's shoes. It would definitely NOT be a good idea to keep them around giving the illusion of legitimacy to anything they say

I can see the political benefit of making the crazies the face of the GOP. But this one is nuts enough to do something truly damaging. She's already threatened Pelosi and Cori Bush.

Not stable people, of course. But the more she talks, the more lies seep into our national conversation. That's toxic for a democracy, as we witnessed with Trump. We almost lost our whole country.

Plus she's angry and unstable. It's not hard to imagine her popping a cap in a Democrat and feeling justified in doing so. Let's expel her before that happens. The slight political benefit of her example is not worth the life of any member of Congress.

I have no reason to believe that she will temper her nuttiness; and when she feels more comfortable and at-ease in her current position, I tend to think her Qrazy Qonspiracies will get some serious air-play and from that, she (and by extension) and her party will get more and more exposure.

From where I sit, that is a long-term, net-gain for the electorate.

more motivated by our dislike for the GOP than our affection for our policies, we would transform from being a political party to an identitarian party (like the Republicans are), meaning we would vote like hell in bigger numbers, we would vote in every election like our lives depend on it, because "winning" would be more important to us, almost like fans of a football team need compulsively to win every week. He's talking about our primitive wiring here, and what decades of studies and also Game Theory can teach us about adjusting our party a little bit to be more effective.

Democrats (on-the-street, average Dems) would be as obsessed with politics as even average Republicans are.

The dark side of this is, obviously, that we become a party whose energy is derived from opposing something, instead of our trademark reputation for being the party of hope and regeneration. But I don't think it's wise to dismiss this theory out of hand, because we only need to look at the Republican party to see how well it can work. We would play the long game better.

The Republicans are sure making it easy for us to coalesce around the idea that the GOP is the anti-Democracy party, which makes our job so much easier in terms of deciding what we are for and what we are against.

One of the panelists on MSNBC just literally said what you wrote: Marjorie Taylor Greene is the face of the new Republican Party.

Even if she's gone, we can probably still make this stick with people like Gatez, Jordan, Cruz, Hawley.

But Taylor-Greene is most certainly a lightning rod, almost a caricature of what we have noticed all along about the GOP under Trump.

So I wouldn't dismiss your point at all. Even if she goes, your essential point is important IMO.
