Rep. Lauren Boebert received $22,000 worth of gas reimbursements while running for Congress

Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado raked in an eye-popping total of more than $22,000 in gas-mileage reimbursements from her campaign for Congress in 2020.

The rather large sum, which can be seen in campaign-finance data on the website OpenSecrets, was first reported by The Denver Post and the local blog Colorado Pols.

While Boebert amassed a total of $2,989,510 in her campaign for office, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, the gas-reimbursement figure is remarkably high given the travel habits of her predecessor on the campaign trail and her relative lack of events during the pandemic.

-snip-

Candidates for federal office are allowed to legally reimburse themselves for miles driven in their personal vehicles using the Internal Revenue Service's mileage rate. In 2020, the rate was 57.5 cents per mile.

Boebert's $22,000 in gas money would mean she drove almost 39,000 miles while hitting the stump in the middle of a pandemic that left many public venues shut down.

no gas refills, no stopping for lunch, or campaign stops to brag you're stealing money better than the average GQPer.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) paid off nearly $20,000 in state tax liens that had accumulated on her restaurant since 2016 less than two weeks before she was elected to Congress, Colorado Newsline reports.

Shooters Grill, the gun-themed restaurant owned by Boebert, accumulated eight liens for nonpayment of unemployment insurance premiums between 2016 and 2020. By early 2020, the restaurant owed the state $19,552.86. According to Garfield County records obtained by Newsline, three of the liens totaling $553.50, were paid off. The remaining five liens, totaling $18,999.36, were paid off on Oct. 22, 2020.

If it was strictly a reimbursement for say, a gas credit card, at 2.50 a gallon and a vehicle getting20 MPG, she would have to drive 176,000 miles. If it was reimbursement for a gas card, there were lots people using it.

Mileage money is supposed to consider wear and tear, depreciation, etc., as well as fuel for the vehicle, but the article refers to it as "gas money".
