on the Social Security. That's not government money. People pay into that their entire lives, along with their employers. When government started raiding the S.S. trust fund cookie jar, they made it political. When people start talking about S.S. being a government handout my hackles rise up.

I know, you're talking about the hypocritical republiCANT'S here. If they only noticed how many times "socialist" things entered into their daily lives, they'd still be total hypocrites.

His “Libertarian” cousin complained about sidewalks. Said he never uses the damned things so why should the gummint make him pay for them?

Apparently the discussion up till then was rational and even interesting but that remark helped my friend lean starkly socialist. Sidewalks? Even sidewalks?

But that’s the Republican way, isn’t it? If it does me no immediate good, I do not want to pay for it. If your child needs medical care, don’t you dare ask the government to cover it with my tax money. If my child needs medical care, on the other hand, then where’s the goddamned government when I need them?

Piss on them. All of them. The Greene-nazis and the Cheney-plutocrats. May they devour each other in a mutual fight to the death.

Social security is gov’t $ in the same ways public roads are built/maintained by govt $. It’s us deciding to tax ourselves for retirement, transportation, public safety, etc. It burns me that we keep talking about govt as us vs them. Govt is us (by the people) deciding every two/four years who will serve in our interest (of the people) to make laws that will provide for the security, safety and general welfare (read the constitution) of all of us (for the people). Unfortunately too many of us have swallowed whole the Reagan delusion that govt is something out there foreign to our everyday experience.
