Biden plunges fully into Covid relief talks

The president knows his presidency rides on swift action on the $1.9 trillion package. On Wednesday, he showed it.

After two weeks of letting negotiations over a Covid relief package linger in Congress, Joe Biden hit the gas on Wednesday.

The president worked the phones and hunkered down with fellow Democrats at the White House, in what aides described as an overt signal that he wants his massive “rescue” package passed and passed quickly.

“If we are going to get our arms wrapped around Covid, we have to act fast, we have to act big and the sooner we can start the better,” said White House senior adviser Cedric Richmond. “That’s how the president looks at it.”

Inside the White House, there is a belief that so much of Biden’s agenda is tied to the success of the Covid relief package — the most vital of which is containing the spread of coronavirus — that inaction would cripple the presidency and delay would endanger it. They also view the bill as critical to resolving some of the thornier issues they’ve confronted in their short time in office, including school reopenings, which would be accelerated with a massive resource infusion if the relief bill were to pass.
