But when federal officials began investigating the claim, they found Derges was making “misleading statements” about the treatment, prosecutors said — it didn’t actually include any stem cells. ...

According to emails reviewed by investigators, Derges received a message in March 2019 from the University of Utah’s director of cell therapy and regenerative medicine who said “there were no live stem cells in [platelet rich plasma] or amniotic fluid.” Despite that warning, she continued to run promotional seminars and market her product to patients as containing stem cells, according to federal prosecutors. ... On April 11, 2020, Derges posted she had an “amazing treatment” that “stands to provide a potential cure for COVID-19 patients that is safe and natural,” according to the indictment. ...

In a Facebook post on Monday seemingly referring to the charges, Derges posted an image depicting David and Goliath:

“Lies and twisted words mean nothing. Truth and righteousness mean everything,” she wrote. “God stood with David, I have the faith that He will stand with me against the Goliath that I face today — his sole purpose is to destroy. Please believe in me and please keep praying for me.”

Derges, who beat out three other Republican candidates in the primary for Missouri House District 140 and ran unopposed in the general election,...

She lied to federal investigators twice. Just one count of wire fraud can bring up to 20 years in federal prison.

Is this kind of thing any surprise?

The entire morality of american "conservatives" has become "anything to win".

There is no objective truth for them. The "truth" is whatever serves the purpose of winning at a particular moment, even if that "truth" is entirely opposed to a previously held "truth".

"It's wrong for a president to appoint a supreme court justice in an election - the people should have a voice in this important decision!".

"Of course, the president can appoint a supreme court justice a month or two before an election; it is his right under the constitution!"

No surprise to me at all that many of these people will descend into variations of this theme, into more and more basic actions of deception for profit. "It's not wrong if I win".

The next step in their moral evolution appears to be "might makes right". Do everything you can to have a tactical advantage, then take what you want by force.

They have no viable ideas to improve society so they show up to public discourses carrying weapons, saying it "their right" while making sure they never say out loud that their intent is intimidation - "do what I want or I'll hurt you". It's actually pretty chickenshit if you think about it - enirely lacking the confidence to just say what they really mean.
