Hi all, I am new to DU (but have often read posts as a guest). My kids say Im technologically challenged so I never took the time to set up an account (it was actually very easy)!
Im not well connected in online communities, but am seeking support to fund anti-gerrymandering efforts in Kansas. As the title indicates, I will match up to $5000 (with weekly confirmation that I am actually donating), based on the progress bar in the ActBlue link.
I am an orthodontist in western KS, I am generally not much of an activist, but gerrymandering crosses an ideological line for me. In Kansas gerrymandering is becoming a real issue: the state legislature has grown more conservative and maintains a slim supermajority allowing an override of a veto. Maps will be drawn in the coming months by the redistricting committee (and I anticipate they will be manipulative), thus facing a veto from Gov. Laura Kelly (D). The GOP has already stated their plans to gerrymander the one remaining Kansas Democratic US Congresswoman out of her seat in suburban Kansas City

Furthermore, the state legislature just passed a bill to effectively ban abortions in the state and have quite a brutal agenda lined up. The state isnt as horribly conservative as many think, we just need equitable maps, and this mess can be cleaned up by 2022. If the maps fail to get out of the legislature, they will be handled by a non-partisan slate of federal judges, (which is considered a win) saving a US Congresswoman and the integrity of all 175 state legislative districts.
I will match donations to this non-profit up to $5,000. [link:https://www.fairmapsfund.org| I made them an ActBlue link and will donate weekly up to $5000:

(76 posts)You all are too friendly, I'm happy to officially be a member! And it's the least I could do, this is a process that truly needs to be non-partisan.

Weve had the means to do this for years,
but the political will is weak.

(5,754 posts)When I moved there, Republican meant Bob Dole and Nancy Kassebaum. What ever happened to Kansas?

(76 posts)Those names slip through the cracks with new folks like Brownback and Kobach.

(15,460 posts)He showed a bit of humanity and empathy and was therefore pilloried. He was a player of the party just like McConnell.
I was in Kansas in the 60's/70's and the descent from a progressive, open-minded culture (D and R) into a divisive/hatred-fueled environment started then.
Puppeteers were already playing the left vs right back then. And they were mainly RW/conservative operatives who wanted to cause mayhem. They knew they couldn't win on reason or one-person, one-vote. Gotta deny voting, gotta suppress it.
Welcome!

(14,971 posts)and my best friend growing up was Alf Landon's granddaughter, lol. Alf would be a Democrat today.
I currently live in NC , where we have our own problems with gerrymandering. Duke University published a paper stating that Democrats would have won back the General Assembly two years after Republicans took it over if it weren't for the extreme gerrymandering. It's the only way Republicans can stay in power.
Thanks for doing this and I will donate.
