Senate Blocks $15 Minimum Wage Hike
February 5, 2021 at 6:43 am EST By Taegan Goddard

New York Times: “By a voice vote, senators backed an amendment from Senator Joni Ernst, Republican of Iowa, to ‘prohibit the increase of the federal minimum wage during a global pandemic.’ It was a signal that the wage hike would be difficult to pass in an evenly split Senate, where at least one Democrat, Senator Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, is already on record opposing it.”

1. It was always going to be one of the casualties of getting the overall bill passed.

Manchin has been extremely vocal about it. He won't vote to pass the budget in the end if it's in there.

from another thread....

Sanders, the Senate Budget chairman, successfully defused a fight late Thursday over Biden’s proposal to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.

At issue was a non-binding budget amendment from Senator Joni Ernst, an Iowa Republican, that opposed raising the wage “during a global pandemic.”

While Sanders said he still intends to increase the wage to $15 an hour in the virus relief package, he said his plan always called for a five year phase-in. He said the $15 wage would be in place five years from now, not during the pandemic itself, so he would support Ernst’s amendment.

5. In GA & WY, current min wage ranges from $5.15 to $7.25/ hour.

In low wage stages, any incremental increase will mean a huge immediate increase.
As a Georgia resident, I’m OK with this approach.

7. Will Manchin go along with the incremental 5 year (ending with 15 usd per hour) approach?
Fri Feb 5, 2021, 09:24 AM
Feb 2021

Perhaps I am wrong but I always thought it (15 usd ph) would be incremental anyway, AND that Manchin was opposed to even that.

14. $15/hr was barely or not even a living wage 3 years ago

In 5 more years we will just need to raise it again.

This is so fucking demoralizing. We have a military budget that is beyond fucking bonkers and we cannot seem to find a way to keep our people from living in poverty.

4. Sorry that isn't quite what happened

Biden's proposal was to raise the minimum wage by 2025, which would not be during the pandemic. Regardless, the amendment was non binding and has no affect on the terms of the bill. Manchin will still vote for the bill as his political future will depend on it.

9. I hope they consider $11 an hour at least
Fri Feb 5, 2021, 09:35 AM
Feb 2021

There's a separate stand alone bill for $15 that has zero chance of passing, take $11 an hour and make it a little quicker than 2025 so you can then work on raising it further.

If 2 years from now the Federal minimum wage is still $7.25 Dems deserve the blame.

10. I mean they should do it anyways, but nobody has actually proposed raising it during a pandemic

Which throws coldwater into all of the republican rhetoric. I would be happy if the first incremental raise is by January. And yes 11 dollars should be a minimum
