This was hardly the biggest political news story yesterday, but during a meeting of the House Judiciary Committee, conspiracy theorist, Trump supporter, and 1/6 truther Rep. Matt Gaetz suggested opening every meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.
...
Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler, who chairs the Committee, thankfully shot down the suggestion, telling Gaetz they didnt need to say the Pledge because the House (as a whole) already said it at the start of their business days.
I proposed that we begin each meeting of the House Judiciary Committee by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Democrats just said "no."@RepJerryNadler said it's "unnecessary." pic.twitter.com/TquNSxqJzv
Rep. Matt Gaetz (@RepMattGaetz) February 4, 2021
NADLER:
Its unnecessary. The House begins every day with the Pledge of Allegiance. Were covered by that. Theres no necessity to say the Pledge of Allegiance twice during the same day.
...
If you need more evidence of how this wasnt a sincere request in the first place, just look at how the House Judiciary GOPs Twitter account shared it. They stopped the clip after Nadler said no, but before he explained why. For some reason, they didnt think their base needed to know the House already says the Pledge every day.

How I hate their fake patriotism.

This isn't being naive or patriotic. This is a cynical move and cheap political theater by Gaetz and the GOP. Unfortunately Nadler's response wasn't great. Obviously with hindsight and more time to respond, I think a better response would have been, "We don't do political theater here Mr. Gaetz, maybe you need to say the pledge several times a day to remind yourself why you are here, but speaking for my side of the aisle, we take our oath to the people and to the nation seriously so we only need to say it once to keep it in our mind."

(11,726 posts)Gaetz is definitely emotionally stunted. A life of privilege and lack of consequences leads to a lack of intellectual curiosity and being a buffoon. Look at George W Bush. Look at Trump. Both, grown men, who gave other people derogatory nicknames. Bush appeared to do so with a "frat boy" mentality. Less mean spirited, just dickish. Trump obviously, is petty and mean, just a horrible, emotionally crippled person. Gaetz fits right into the club.

(11,682 posts)What a stupid waste-of-time-game they play. Set up situations like this just to play up a factious account of how loyal Rs want to recite the P of A, "but those anti-American Dems won't let them!" In reality the Rs see an insurrection pushed by Trump, the Republican POTUS, and hush up as to the historic level of anti-democratic importance of it.

(10,749 posts)Why should school kids have to pledge allegiance to the flag, or to anything else for that matter.
Do elected officials really need to pledge allegiance to the flag? They have taken the oath of office. That's enough for me (at least for Democrats - Republicans' oath of office is effectively meaningless as most of them would like to overthrow the government they've taken an oath to). Do husbands and wives repeat their wedding vows every morning?
FFS, can we get rid of this nonsense. Along with singing the national anthem at every sporting event.

Insurrection! - but don't burn the flag!
Trample all over the Constitution - but respect the flag!
Assault the Capitol police with the America flag - but don't refuse to say the Pledge!
Then they gather in their prayer circles to ask their god about killing all those America-hating Liberals.
