The National Football League told President Joe Biden that it is making all of its 32 football stadiums available a mass coronavirus vaccinations sites for the general public.
Currently, seven NFL teams are hosting vaccinations for COVID-19 at or near their stadiums.
"The NFL and our 32 member clubs are committed to doing our part to ensure that vaccines are as widely available in our communities as possible," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a letter Thursday to Biden.
"We can expand our efforts to stadiums more effectively because many of our clubs have offered their facilities previously as COVID testing centers as well as election sites over the past several months," Goodell wrote.

(3,695 posts)Those large sites really help with access in Urban cities and eliminated much of the long lines we're so used to seeing.

Johnson and Johnson vaccine coming soon.
Three million a day might be possible by mid March.

(32,610 posts)Most NFL stadiums have central locations and massive parking lots. Most stadiums are nearby major US cities, other than the Green Bay Packers stadium. This spring and summer will see most of the U.S. vaccination activity, during which time football is on hiatus.
Love this!

(33,643 posts)Oakland and San Diego stadiums still stand (the A's still play at Oakland).
Think St Louis might still as well.
Hopefully their ownership steps up as well if this is going to be done in general.
LOT of people would benefit from the use of the Oakland Coliseum for this purpose.

(7,516 posts)The New York Jets/Giants and the Los Angeles Chargers/Rams share stadiums. If the Jets are playing a home game in a particular week, the Giants will usually play an away game. Same thing with the Chargers and Rams.
I'm not sure if the Rams/Chargers still own their former stadiums in San Diego or St. Louis. As for the Oakland Coliseum, I'm fairly certain that is owned by the city and/or county government.

(33,643 posts)Yup the OACC is city/county owned.
And it would be a GREAT spot for a mass-vaccination site

(4,482 posts)Only the Patriots, Dolphins, Giants/Jets, Rams (but not Chargers), and "Football Team" own their own stadiums. The others are owned by either the city or county (including the Rams former stadium) except the one in Houston which is owned by a non-profit. The Chargers former stadium is owned by the state thru SDSU.

(24,262 posts)UC Berkeley and Stanford. And also San Jose State. San Francisco started using the Moscone Center which is a huge convention center. There should be no shortage of government owned buildings all over the country that are not being used right now. Stanford is not state owned, but it is a huge medical complex which could provide personnel to staff the operation.
Usually these kinds of places are positioned near public transportation, too.
