(15,279 posts)It was great story-telling about a scandal that really was subsumed by Watergate.

(102,231 posts)under Nixon and Watergate. I guess at the time, they were in scandal overload. Given the times and parallels to Trump, it should be made into a movie. Congrats, Rachel.

(90,648 posts)I believed that from the time of his ousting right up until I watched part of Rachels podcast.
Then I realized he was a really major grifter and bribe-taker on a scale that never seems to have really made the news.

(7,627 posts)I put it on my ipod and have listened to the first three episodes while hiking. Its incredible. The parralels with what we went through with Trump are striking. Now, Agnew was very smart and smooth. I shudder to think what would happen nowadays if somebody like Agnew was living in the present and had access to media like twitter and the like . We would not have survived it.

(8,039 posts)This is great news! I listened to the podcast in real time. It was excellent (for those who haven't heard it).
I had NO idea of the crimes that Spiro Agnew engaged in because at that time all of the attention was about Watergate (I was a Jr. in high school).
I think it'll make an excellent movie! Now I think I want to re-listen to the podcast.
I'm trying to think of casting choices for Agnew....hmmmm..... Woody Harrelson....?

(1,654 posts)He had his fans, though. One was my cousin-in-law who I really liked but the way he would castigate the press hit a nerve with her. She didn't like reporters like Dan Rather who were "not respectful" to the president. You know, the office deserves respect, etc. I loved her dearly but she was wrong. It was ironic - Agnew and Nixon deserving respect. The criticism "proved the press was biased."

(14,888 posts)I should relisten to that podcast. I only partly followed it.
I didn't like Nixon or Agnew but in my early 20's Agnew's crimes were of less import to me than Nixon's.
Again - Yay, Rachel! 🎉

(13,036 posts)Like the Con, Nixon's friendships were mostly transactional. His relationship w Agnew was one of pure convenience so he can get elected given how popular Agnew was in his day w the GOP. Yet he was one crooked SOB. I loved every word of rachel's book Bag Man & listened to the podcast with great interest. She is quite the compelling & entertaining storyteller.

(14,888 posts)Funny thing at least as far as I know as a 2nd
Generation half Greek-American;
Agnew was a nasty Republican
And Dukakis was boring
Off hand I can't think of any other well known Greek Americans in politics at the Federal Level anyway ...
🤔 Maybe I'll Google. 👍
