Mike Pence Lands Job With Anti-LGBTQ+ Group After Getting Booted From White House
The Heritage Foundation revealed its latest hire on Thursday in a blog post acknowledging the close ties between Heritage and the former Trump administration.
“Over the course of the past four years, our team at Heritage has worked closely with members of the Trump administration on a host of policy accomplishments,” wrote Heritage President Kay C. James in a statement. “Vice President Mike Pence will join forces with Heritage to ensure we continue to advance conservative principles and policy solutions.”
Pence will provide consultation services on a wide variety of issues, Heritage says, and will write for its conservative blog, The Daily Signal.
“I am profoundly honored to join [Heritage],” Pence wrote in a press release of his own. “I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and working with the all-star team at Heritage as we continue to take the case for a strong national defense, free markets, and traditional values.”
It’s that reference to “traditional values” that raises a red flag for many civil rights observers, as Pence and Heritage are aligned in their history of anti-LGBTQ+ animus. Pence gained national prominence in the years prior to Trump’s election by signing Indiana’s so-called “religious freedom” law in 2015, which permitted businesses to turn away LGBTQ+ customers due to their religious beliefs.
