"They" are losing me - and already lost my wife.

"They" as in politicians, the MSM - TV in general. She no longer cares and no longer watches - and I am on my way there.

We were raised to believe that the truth is important. We were raised to believe that people collectively and individually are important - all people, despite any parameter/descriptor you want to place on them.

Since 2000, it has become clear that the truth no longer matters, that people no longer matter (unless you have loads of money and can do something for them). It has become only about winning and losing, power and greed, at absolutely any cost. And it makes us sick to behold. Maybe it was before that, maybe it was always like that, and only age and experience and bumps and bruises along the way really open one's eyes.

This is what a few weeks at the beach and limited exposure to news does to you, I guess - a reevaluation of where things stand. We did watch the debate - which can't hold a candle of course to the reaction to the endless, seemingly drug-addled lies of Romney, which are now lauded everywhere. We've peered at a few newspapers and I've scanned the web for sanity. Of course, there remains sanity and hope here on DU - we share values, and we see those values increasingly under attack. But just scanning pundits and polls, the number of absolute mind-numbing suckers in this country are out of control.

But here at the Outer Banks, where one is face to face with the wonders of nature every day, where personal values can be examined and confirmed, it also becomes clear where those values are not....if I think of the state of the world in general, of how people are treating each other, how governments treat their people, the deaths and injustices due to religious fanaticism, the lust for power, the throwing of people under the bus so that the wealthy can maintain and even grow every cent. It takes the breath away. Again - has it always been this way? Now and then, yes....so once again, maybe it is just when one chooses to "go there" and think about it.

Have I lost hope for all humanity in general? There will always be pockets of hope, great deeds being done, fine people - but on balance, the trajectory of our species is not promising - and I do think that the earth is getting quite fed up with us anyway, to tell the truth.

I feel really lucky - to have the wife and daughters and pets that I do, to have stimulating hobbies and interests, to be able to become just a bit more isolated, as seems to be my own trajectory. I also feel lucky to have found DU, to be able to share my "bad days" (which this clearly must be one) with you.....

I am searching for the trigger that will reverse all of this. When Obama wins, I suspect we will see four more years of total blockage of his and Dem's ideas. What is it that will change the process, wake and shake things up and prove my fears and worries to be unfounded? And in the rare chance that Romney somehow becomes president - help us all. We will need it even more.

4. Obama winning will be more important in 2012 than it was in 2008 even, as will Hillary45 in 16 /20

regaining the courts

the house/ the senate

and MOST important in 14- the governorships that control the elections in the state.

Obama did more than any president for the good since LBJ and FdR
even with the obstruction

(now if Obama will get only get the line item veto)

and Julian Castro becoming texas Gov. will turn Texas blue (and in 2020 help with the census so redistricting won't happen again in 2020)
and with liberal fireballs elected in the senate (like Elizabeth Warren, we can move even more forward

remember 10% of something is better than 100% of nothing.

5. I share a similar outlook.

And if anything, the last 4 years have served to reinforce that view. I personally believe we have passed the tipping point and have become a cancer on our Mother Earth that will destroy that which has sustained us.

I feel like Frodo fighting the orc's, This whole thing is coming down to the age old battle of Good vs. Evil, If Willard (Soron) Romney takes over our sky's will darken with poverty and war the country we once knew will no longer be, It will be sold to the evil Orc's and thrashed for profit and entertainment,

8. I am fully aware that politicians have a way, a manner of speaking....

...that manner tends to include stretching the meanings behind opponents words, omission, avoidance etc. But there has always been some semblance of truth behind the thoughts and ideas.

However, and in 2012, I am not blind to the manner in which Romney has completely devolved the political conversation to outright and neverending lies. I honestly think he has set the bar so very low that he will have tainted the Republican image (to their own constituency), for several presidencies to come.

9. Great post...You are living a proper life

The trigger, I'm afraid, will be economic reality. The not-so-well-adjusted will try to Teabag this country into an emotional tailspin, but that won't get in the way of your relationships with your family and the earth. And they will ultimately fail because they run on hatred and unhappiness.

I recently read about this Spanish writer, Vila-Matas, who's enjoying some late-in-life success around the world now. He writes about two types of reality; the hard-nosed general kind, which is "an unbearable burden, fragmentary and without meaning," and an internal realism composed of our own "fragile fluttering inventions, which can be both beautiful and truly affecting." Reminded me of my own life, as did your post.

10. I don't watch much TV.

I don't trust the news because of the advertisers. I guess at what the real news must be when GE runs a big ad, or Shell, or BP.

I heard that during the roaring twenties more money was spent on advertising than education. That may not be the case now, but I think the news shows are guided by the money. That's why it's so important for Romney to to do away with Lehrer and all of PBS.

People watch Fox News and even though most of the personalities are in bed with Bain Capital; people watch it and think its news.

Until people wake up; the entities with the money will continue to guide and control the news.

11. truth certainly does not matter to the M$M
Wed Oct 10, 2012, 11:17 AM
Oct 2012

and never did if Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent" is to be believed.

I don't watch a lot of M$M. Just the local news, which is mostly car crashes and shootings, unless there's a big fire, and sports, of course. Gotta have the sports.

I suppose if I had cable I would watch Maddow-Stewart and Colbert. Maybe even LarryO. But sorta more entertainment than truth.

Truthfully though, I do not find that much sanity and hope at DU. Too often, it seems the only value we share is a commitment to "hatred of people who disagree with us".

but I don't see the way out of America's Dark Night yet...

We're at an historic turning point for Democracy in this country. It will either be taken to the morgue or cobbled back together, but Democracy in America is on life support. All we who can do is keep the vigil for the critical patient and get the best doctors on it we can.

If there's nothing to do but bear witness, then at least bear witness to the Truth. Speak out against the lies. There is no way to really isolate from what is happening. It will invade like a tsunami on the sleeping village, or an evil wind rocking a tree house. There is no safe haven. (Not saying you should inflict mainstream media on yourself--just that the nasty stream of greed and corruption seeps everywhere and robs everyone eventually). You know what I mean--it's hard to even be in a beautiful place without being wistful for what might have been...

What gets to me is the OPPORTUNITIES missed and thrown away because we are ruled by greed and corruption. The opportunities thrown away because of the polarization of this country. The opportunities deferred because we are always fighting each other--(it has become a "cold civil war"--I don't see that as an exaggeration). So many missed opportunities for working together and improving our collective lot. People have such a hard time visualizing anything better. And such a hard time trusting each other now. The Rethuglicans go on and on about "waste"--they never see the human potential that has truly been wasted.

This country has been looted by masterful pirates. Robbed from within. With the physical state of the planet in crisis we need to be working together to face climate change, the greatest challenge yet. We won't be --we'll be fighting over who gets the last drop of oil. Unless...
(to be continued after November 6).....

Thanx for the soapbox. Cya in the trenches.

16. I, too, have struggled with the issues that you and your wife are facing.

I, too, have wondered whether things have always been this way and whether or not there is any reason to hope.

My answer lies here: http://laelth.blogspot.com/2011/01/turning-american-ship-of-state.html

It's a long and complicated answer, but that's because this is a complex and complicated problem. Hope you find my reflections useful.
