Keith Boykin @keithboykinThis is Fire... Rep. I was hoping to engage with the new distinguished gentleman from Utah, as he sat here lecturing us about patriotism, Jeffries began, And I was just going to ask him how he voted after a violent mob attacked the Capitol to hunt down members of Congress, to hang Mike Pence, to assassinate Nancy Pelosi, to stop us from undertaking our constitutional responsibilities as part of the peaceful transfer of power, more than a hundred officers seriously injured, brain injuries, head trauma, one officer lost three fingers, another officer, because of an assault on him, is likely to be blind. Officer Sicknick died, blood was spilled, two other officers are no longer with us.
And you want to sit here and lecture us about patriotism? When you voted to object to an election that you know Joe Biden won, and perpetrated the big lie? Jeffries said, then spoke about looking forward to working with Owens, as Democrats had worked with Trump, despite their disagreements.
But the notion of you coming here lecturing us on your first day before this committee, its not about words its about actions? Jeffries said. You know what? Explain your actions on January 7th. When you supported an insurrection.
"...I would just simply say, and the impeachment managers going to do a great job, but a violent insurrection resulted in the spilling of American blood. People died. The Capitol was desecrated. Urine and feces was left behind. The Confederate flag was bandied about. That didnt even happen in this Capitol during the Civil War. The Trump flag was placed in the stead of the American flag. Thats an insurrection, thats sedition, thats undemocratic, thats problematic, and the American thing to do is to stand up to it...

Like you, I'm black and I can't see any reason why a black person would be a Republican. And it wouldn't matter if they were family; any Trump supporting black person is dead to me.

(14,735 posts)That until the 1970s the official doctrine of the Mormon church inferred that blacks were a cursed race. The Nixon DOJ threatened their tax exempt status and they clarified the doctrine.
Really sounds like a church I would feel comfortable in.

(2,891 posts)Revelations by Supreme (Court). The Church sure doesn't like losing money. Or, apparently breaking even...they sold ZCMI, and all its long and rich Mormon History, in a heartbeat when it didn't turn a profit two years running. Revelation by Supreme (CPA)..bye bye to those stores.

(10,578 posts)In Mormonism, the priesthood does not simply refer to clergymen. All adult men are given the priesthood. And at 12 they are given an introductory version of it.
That means that black people were inherently inferior according to official church policy. That is what led the Carter administration to prepare to take away their tax exempt status. And it is why other colleges were refusing to play BYU in sports. Also, there was a temple being built in Brazil, which had a large black population, and where bloodlines were not so easily identified due to centuries of mixing between African, European, and Amerindian peoples.
Then came the revelation. Spencer W. Kimball ended the ban in 1978. At that point, according to Wikipedia, "missionaries no longer needed special permission to teach black people, converts were no longer asked about African heritage, and marks were no longer made on membership records indicating African heritage."

(833 posts)condemnation of un-American hypocrisy. It probably won't change Owens' mind, but at least he now knows that he can't spew his pompous wrongheadedness with impunity. He'll think twice before he invites such a tongue-lashing again. And if he's fool enough to try it, we'll all have more delicious put-downs like this to savor. Bravo, Rep. Jeffries!

Once again, Burgess Owens has shown why he is unfit to represent Utahns living in the fourth Congressional district. He still hasnt adequately answered questions of alleged plagiarism or his relationship to Q-Anon. Now, we find out Owens has followed the example of his GOP predecessor, refusing to play by the rules and holding on to a substantial amount of illegal campaign contributions with only a week until the election.
If voters cant trust a candidate to honestly follow laws and regulations during their campaign, there is no reason to believe that voters can trust that person once in office.
