Trump impeachment lawyer says he'll use video of Dems' own remarks at trial

Donald Trump’s lead impeachment attorney on Friday suggested he’ll take aim at Democrats’ own words in his arguments during the former president's Senate impeachment trial next week.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham asked Trump attorney Bruce Castor if he'll be using “dueling video” with Democrats expected to make their case that Trump incited the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection by using video clips of rioters and Trump’s rally remarks on the Ellipse.

“Will you then respond with Maxine Waters, a number of other Democrat officials not speaking out about the Antifa and other extremist rallies over the last summer?” Ingraham asked.

“I think you can count on that,” Castor said. “If my eyes look a little red to the viewers, it's because I've been looking at a lot of video.”

Wow more right wing false equivalency.

Ignoring that Antifa is more a mindset than an organization when have leftists taken over a building, murdered cops and threatened to execute people?

2. Deflection only works on right wing blogs. It's a piss poor strategy as a defense against crimes.

It establishes nothing regarding the defendant's guilt or innocence. It does not address the charges. Only shows how incompetent the lawyer wannabe dude is.

3. Since when does "not speaking out against" equate to inciting an insurrection?

Apples, oranges, bananas?

They are probably pretty confident that Trump won't be convicted anyway so it won't matter how weak the defense is.

If you're on trial for shoplifitng, you can get off if you can prove that someone else also shoplifted. It goes all the way back to English Common Law, and, I think, the Code of Hammurabi before that.

finding video of Democrats NOT doing something (“Will you then respond with Maxine Waters, a number of other Democrat officials not speaking out about the Antifa...”), won’t this just make Trump look worse?

I mean, it shouldn’t be too hard to find video of individual Dems saying ONE stupid thing in the heat of the moment, but surely the prosecutors will be attempting to demonstrate that Trump has a long-standing pattern of behavior. They’re trying to prove that he incited an insurrection — I highly doubt they’re going to only show video from his speech on January 6 and say “there you have it.” They’re going to go back and show lots and lots of video from the last five years — and other evidence, in tweets and emails — of him using violent rhetoric and encouraging violence.

They’re going to make the argument that any politician can say one dumb thing in the heat of the moment, but that’s not what Trump did. He spent years inciting the violence that finally occurred on January 6. If the defense shows video of individual Dems saying one stupid thing, it’s going to kinda make the prosecution’s point for them. They’ll be able to compare a not-well-thought-out, throwaway comment, to what a real long-term pattern of behavior looks like.

7. Oh, goody. A both sides do it bullshit defense so republicans can get all self-righteous

in their monologuing.

Trump lawyers aren't actually mounting a defense of the charge.

They are mounting an attack on the Democratic Party instead. They're choosing to ignore what actually happened on January 6, 2021 and downplay the events of that day and all the days before that lead up to it.

Republicans have made their choice. They will continue to embrace Trump, support Qanon, encourage violence as a political tool, and to justify any and all absurdities as a legitimate means of governing.

A serious charge has been levied. The proof is there.

But the GOP will bring cheerleading clowns with a soap opera storyline in hopes of subverting the process.

As usual.

Absolutely NOTHING to offer as a defense. If they can’t even say anything on his behalf but plan on just using a “both sides” argument as an excuse? Wow. Wow. Wow. They have nothing to offer. Shows how guilty he is.
