Republicans look to pummel Democrats on school reopenings

Republicans are pummeling Democrats on school reopenings, believing it will be a potent wedge issue in the midterm elections and offer the GOP a path back to winning suburban voters.

Explosive battles are playing out in Democratic-led cities and states over how quickly public schools should reopen and Republicans are picking at divisions between elected officials and teachers unions.

The GOP’s House and Senate campaign arms are tracking union donations to Democratic members and accusing them of putting special interests ahead of student education.

In a floor speech this week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) railed against what he described as Democratic “goalpoast-moving,” pointing to districts that refuse to return to in-person learning until all teachers have been vaccinated.

GOP members of the House and Senate have introduced resolutions to restrict government funds for public schools that have not reopened.

"More than 100 students and faculty at a San Diego school were forced to enter quarantine this week just days after returning to in-person learning.

On Tuesday,Escondido Union School District sent 8,700 students back to school for on-campus instruction, according to a release from the district obtained by The Hill.

The students, spread across 500 hybrid-model classrooms across 23 campuses, were divided into groups that attended school for in-person learning at staggered times.

Within two days of retuning back to in-person learning, however, the district recorded 17 positive cases of the coronavirus. According to the release, "Eight of those individuals came to campus in an infectious state."

By Thursday evening, 81 students and 15 staff members were placed under a mandatory 10-day quarantine."

they will remain closed. It look likes a local issue to me at this time. Everybody wants to re-open schools - when they perceive it is safe to do so.

are forcing the schools to open before the CDC says they should. All these pro-life bozos throw away their closely-held beliefs when they think they can score political points against the Dems.

8. Remember how Republicans claimed to be all about home schooling ?

If they were serious they could have used this time to promote it and show its benefits.

But it was always more about destroying public schools.

And this is the same thing.

whether we want to send our children to school or continue distance learning. In both of my children's classes, the majority of the students are at home. Most of my friends and family have opted to continue distance learning. Therefore, I do not believe this will be a winning issue for the Republicans.
