6. A terrible way to make things better, but I fear even without Trump, a crisis...

...of some sort was almost inevitable. The awful trajectory of the Republican party was already established. Trump was both a symptom of that, and an accelerant. Clearly that awfulness, in and of itself, has not at all been a barrier to Republicans winning elections.

If Clinton had won in 2016, and then COVID came along on her watch, I sincerely doubt she would have won reelection. She could have led a pandemic response ten times better than the rest of the world, but Republicans, and then the so-called "liberal" media following suit, would have hung every single death around her neck like an albatross.

She'd likely have lost either to Trump having run again, or worse, someone as awful as Trump but smarter and more competent.

Maybe it will turn out to be a sad kind of "luck" that we hit this crisis point with Trump himself instead of with a possibly more dangerous version of Trump.
