QAnon has been in the news a lot in recent weeks. Polling shows that many people at least partially blame it for the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, and it's a scary and dangerous conspiracy theory.
But we should be clear that it truly is a fringe movement. True QAnon believers are a very small percentage of the population. Republicans should have little electoral fear of speaking out against QAnon in particular, even if certain conspiracy theories (such as falsely believing Donald Trump lost reelection only because of fraud) have been prevalent in some circles.
Last month, the NBC News poll asked voters whether they had positive, negative, neutral or no views of QAnon. A mere 2% held positive views. The rest were either negative (42%), neutral (11%), or weren't sure or didn't know (45%).
Keep in mind here that this poll was taken after the US Capitol insurrection, when many blamed QAnon for spreading misinformation that in part led to the event.

(22,035 posts)Well, not really.
Most Americans want stability. It's the only way to achieve the American Dream.
Most American corporations want stability. It's the only way to achieve profitability.
The chaos of Trumpism, Fascism, etc. will only upset the stability that the American economy demands in order to function.
QAnon is a dangerous anomaly but not a populist threat.

(22,035 posts)The only part of the Russian economy that benefits from its current policies are the oligarchs, essentially colleagues of Putin's.
The general population doesn't benefit from the current Russian economy. En masse, the oil and gas profits go to a privileged few and maybe to the actual energy-related workers. Some technological competent people make good money hacking for their government but generally, their technology development sucks and they have to steal American tech to function.
Most Russians do not enjoy a high quality of life compared to what Americans are used to.

(25,936 posts)The oligarchs make out like bandits when energy costs rise due to instability, however.

(7,510 posts)The polling mainly shows that the Qanon label's brand image is tarnished.
It doesn't mean that people have stopped believing in the constituent conspiracy theories or that they have changed their anti-government, anti-elite, anti-globalist attitudes.

(12,132 posts)He never heard of them until I showed him where all his whack job conspiracy theories came from.
Now he thinks I made all that up to be argumentative. He's still today posting Dominion conspiracies on his Facebook page as proof the election was stolen.
We were friends in high school 40 years ago. Now I just laugh at him.

I wouldn't be surprised that millions went there and realized it was the crazy train. Got off, never reboarded.
Others may have gone to check out the ridiculousness or to troll.
I'm quite certain it's not 30 million actual adherents.

(100,068 posts)During our weekly meet up yesterday, the conversation shifted to Eric Garcetti and one of my neighbors just blurts out "Oh yeah he's funded by George Soros!". And then he starts just trash talking San Francisco and California in general. I just wanted to say "Oh yeah? If you hate California so much then what are you doing living here?".
Even worse the conversation drifted towards education and then all kinds of conspiracy theories about teaching kids gender identity and sex education opened up and things started really getting uncomfortable. Then they brought up the conspiracy theory (I'm sure Alex Jones is behind this one) about male athletes "identifying as" female athletes so they could win competitions. At that point I had to make an excuse and leave.
Oh and at one point one of my neighbors - who I am pretty sure is a raging hardcore racist, said that he was boycotting the Super Bowl because of the NFL's stance on supporting Black Lives Matter. And during the sex talk, he says to his wife - "they just approved this and you won't hear CNN say it because they are afraid of reporting this!"
Yeah I got to find a new place to live.

(6,679 posts)Even the 2% bothers me.
I take polls with a huge grain of salt. They seem to no longer be much to rely on, but the propaganda value can be huge. 2% of 350 million Americans is 7 million people.... pull out kids we end up with upwards of 3 Million supporting these whackadoodles?
That's a lot of crazy ...
