Received it Friday at 0800. Did my 1/2hr sit down under supervision.
Felt fine. Got home and was tired. Friday night was hell for me. Fever, bad chills, body aches, tossing and turning.
I was on the couch all day Saturday like I had the flu.
I thought my Typhoid and my Yellow fever shots were bad. This one really hit me hard.
Others who got the shot with me had little to no symptoms.
If you are on this protocol. Many people recommend starting meds and keeping up with them before and after the shot.
Having the peace of mind is nice though.

Prep with ibuprofen and fluids.
Having the time just in case is a positive.

(11,222 posts)but a few say even after a couple days. That it is suggested weakens the vaccine, and hides symptoms. Over the last couple weeks I have not gotten a solid answer on that and have been paying attention, like now, lol.

(1,406 posts)Without meds after my shot. I was burning up and was racked with pain.
Uncle Sam has shot me full of all kinds of stuff over the years, and this one by FAR was the worst.
It was like a double dose of my Lyme's disease.

(11,222 posts)fever, would be the common sense reason why you take it. So I hear you. I will just watch, see and judge myself. And reality, I think the suggestion that may "weaken" would be like, not enough to even have the consideration if you need the medicine.
Thanks.
I am getting it in a couple weeks.

(14,752 posts)Tylenol and ibuprofen both suppress the immune response if they are in your system, and will slightly lessen the reaction of the shot.
You can take Tylenol after you have the shot.
My daughter is a nurse, and had Covid in July and her vaccine in early January. She said she was far sicker 12 hours after the second shot than she was with the actual virus, but it only lasted about 6-8 hours.

Thanks.

(833 posts)took nothing for twelve hours after the first shot; she wanted her body to have its full reaction to the shot. Then she took one ibuprofen. Several hours later, she took one acetaminophen. That's it. Not giving medical advice, just passing on what I was told. I get my first Pfizer shot, tomorrow, and will try to tough it out if I have a bad reaction.

I recommend all shots. Like I said previous.
I have had Typhoid, Anthrax, Yellow Fever, Plague, Both Hep's, Many others I cannot recall, and I still believe in vaccination.
Just have time set aside and fluids. I just did not want people with little or no sick time to be adversely effected, work wise.

(27,881 posts)My brother was at my house several times when he was likely very contagious, but it was early in the pandemic and we didn't know as much as we do, now. So, is it possible I caught it but was asymptomatic?
I've never had flu, either. Or, if I have, I was asymptomatic with that, too. He has had very symptomatic flu.
Of course, I have no idea what brand of vaccine I'll be receiving, when the time comes.

(11,222 posts)Jan 6th'ish, 2021. We all went down, about the same period and had different experience. We are hotel in Eugene and we had a tech company from Ca at our front desk putting in a system for a week. I joked with one if he went to China for Christmas. He says, no.... went beginning of Dec and far from the spot. But, this was before we knew anything. So I too wonder about the shot related to having had covid. I do like to hear others experience.

(38,793 posts)slightly more side effects than the first dose (my mother felt injection and could find the injection site for a few days; my father couldn't sleep on that arm for a few days). But nothing to write home about.
Their reactions were similar to their flu shots. My mom notices nothing; my father reacts a bit more.

(658 posts)She had no affects with the first shot. She received the 2nd shot on Friday. She was achy, chilled, and felt generally ill on Friday night and slept all day Saturday. She still feels a little ill today, but much better than she did Friday night and Saturday.
She works in the medical industry so she got her shots through her company. She's 55, I'm 56. I'm hoping to be able to get mine in the next month or so. With my luck though, I'll get the virus just before I'm eligible to take the shot.
(Edit)... She also got the Medurna shots
I work with the military so that is how I received my shots.
Can't be spreading death viruses around the troops. Kind of like: "No fighting in the War Room"

(2,937 posts)that this would all be different. I had foolishly thought--say in July or so--that when the vaccine came out, it would be OUT, like flu shots--you make an appt and go get it. So the plan was for the hubs and I to stagger them so if we both have severe reactions, the other one can let the dogs in and out, feed them, and be up and about feeling fine. No such luck. We feel fortunate to have gotten in for our first Moderna shots on the 4th. Absolutely zero reaction for both of us, barely even arm soreness. I hope the next one does not knock us both out, someone has to tend to the dogs. We are 69 and 70, he is far healthier than I am and so I hope he has less reaction, if there is going to be fallout from it.
The idea that younger people have a worse reaction interests me. The younger the person, the more likely they were slathered with antibacterial stuff as kids. Us? Children of the 50's--we basically ate the sand in our sandbox (what? cats peed there? No prob!) and other dirt, we were exposed to everything, not like kids today. I think this has served us well.
Turin_C3PO
(16,385 posts)may react worse has nothing to do with anti-bacterial soap or anything that you said. It has to do with the age old fact that young people have stronger immune systems than older people, making their reaction to the shot worse.

Should I take Tylenol or Motrin before my vaccination?
If you regularly take aspirin, acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) or ibuprofen (e.g., Motrin, Advil) for other medical conditions, continue to do so as directed by your physician or as needed. Otherwise, do not pre-medicate. Taking over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen before receiving a vaccine may reduce its ability to work and blunt your immune response to the vaccine. After the vaccination, you can take acetaminophen or ibuprofen if it is otherwise safe to do so and if you have symptoms that make you uncomfortable.

ADDITIONAL INFO - from WebMD
Take painkillers before so youll hurt less later. Alternate advice: avoid them so they wont interfere with your immune response: Some people think taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin before a vaccination will interfere with the immune response to the vaccine, Kaplan says. There is no scientific data to substantiate this. However, NSAIDs may precipitate an allergic reaction in some people. Since we do not know with any certainty if and how NSAIDs affect allergic reactions to the COVID vaccines, I advise against taking NSAIDs before and for 2 hours after your vaccination, unless instructed [otherwise] by your physician.
There is no need to pre-medicate with any medications for the vast majority of people, agrees Glatt, whos also a professor of medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. For aches, chills, and mild allergic reactions that may occur after the vaccination, taking acetaminophen or an NSAID is generally OK, he says.

Im not an authority, just sharing info. Ive seen many posts saying do and dont pre-medicate to minimize side effects of the vaccines and thought it deserved its own thread. I hate to see anyone do something that could minimize the effectiveness of the vaccines.
